A little while ago I posted a fairly uninspiring WRUW photo of a Seiko 7006 that I'd just bought off eBay, which I sent to our very own Seikoholic later that day to take a look at since it was running fast - about 5 seconds fast per minute, IIRC, which made it basically unusable. Well, yesterday it made its way back to me, now keeping perfect time but also looking much nicer. It now has a new crystal, an era-appropriate after market bracelet (instead of the after market rubber strap it came on) and is sporting a Kanji daywheel. This last bit is especially impressive, because when I sent it off it was a monolingual English watch. Via some horological wizardry, it's now bilingual! So far I've managed to take exactly one photo of it which isn't terrible (well, ignoring the fact that it's sitting on a ragged bit of cardboard and being held up by the nearest thing to hand). I'm hoping to get a better one for tomorrow's WRUW in the morning, where I can use some natural light. This looks a hell of a lot better in person than it does here. The dial is made of some magical stuff which, depending on the lighting, can vary from practically black, to a deep navy, to a really bright cyan/teal, and look fantastic at every stage. I am also really digging the retro cushion case. Many thanks go to Seikoholic for his great work on this!

It's a great watch, and after some TLC the movement is giving great numbers. The swap of the daywheel was really simple, amazingly so. Daywheel plate / spring and daywheel from an Actus 5, and done. It doesn't matter that the donor was 3:45 crown and the recipient was a 3 o'clock - it was a direct swap. I didn't even have to change the date driving wheel. There's something so elegant and classy about a Kanji daywheel. Thanks for letting me experiment on it.
Seiko's dial magic really is amazing.

Looks great.
I miss my deep blue dial 6309 non 5 dress watch.
Sold way back in the day when you were lucky to get $15 for a runner.
Don't let yours go.

Rest assured, I won't be letting this go, deadly alien disease risk or no! I really love it. I love that the minute hand goes all the way right up to the level of the indices, and points in at the tip (sword style, I think it's called?), makes it very easy to read even to sub-minute accuracy.
Spencer, it was a privelege to have you experiment on the daywheel conversion! Now I have a watch which is one-of-a-kind, and you've learned a new technique you can use for future projects. The dial magic really is awesome, although it makes photography a pain. Get a flash anywhere near it and parts of it flare up cyan, but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as when that happens in natural light. Hopefully I can get some good shots tomorrow morning in daylight.

That is the requirement for a keeper for me.
Minute hand hits the minute track and the second hand AT LEAST hit the minute track if not further.

This one meets both those requirements. Second hand goes a tiny bit further than the minute hand. Is this similar to the 6309 you got rid of? Looks very similar to mine, only real differences are shorter hands (don't quite meet the minute track), different shaped hands and square lume pips instead of round.

Nice write up! Thanks for linking. Yours was a 7006-7007, mine is a 7006-7008, so very close indeed. I had been wondering whether this one was from '72 or '82, thanks to the decade ambiguity of the case number system, but you've cleared that up for me. I was amused that you said the dial was "completely printed, lacking even the applied metal "SEIKO" dial text" as if it were a bad thing. While I can see how it might be perceived as cost-cutting, I think I actually prefer this. The 6106 I bought before this (and promptly sold to Marlene, which funded this 7006 undertaking) had the applied metal SEIKO and I found it was a little too "blingy" for my taste - it reflected a lot of light, no matter what angle it was viewed from. This might have been accentuated, though, by the giant blingy indices that watch also had. That thing just sparkled like nobody's business. You also said that "when found used, they always seem to run very fast and require service" - as I mentioned, this is exactly the problem I had with mine, so this seems to be an accurate assessment. It's running great now, though. I'm still to much of a nervous noob to try back-hacking it, I'll have to make a note of the offset in seconds from atomic time so I can see how much it's losing/gaining a day. I'm certainly happy with it so far, but then my expectations were pretty low, coming from an all-quartz background.

I remember reading this, years ago! Nice. I had one of these watches, JF, also years ago. Sold it, didn't get much of anything for it, now I'll see about getting one again and doing the same conversion.
