So I've had my OTB JDM Sumo for a couple months now and I reckon I've given it time enough to settle in. Most of you know its modded with a MM300 dial and handset which John over on SCWF kindly put in for me. So as its running 2-4 seconds slow a day I thought I'd open her up and regulate her today. I didn't expect to find this Proudly written on the outside of the caseback is MADE IN JAPAN  The inside of the caseback told a VERY different story  I don't want to hear another word about Loy |

Now some will argue that they're made in Seiko factories with the same quality control. I argue the caseback finish on this is shite. |

I really couldn't care less where it's made, pretty much everything's made in China these days anyway , however sticking made in Japan on the back of something when it's made in China is pretty poor.

Ironically, the blue dialed versions don't have that stamping on the case back interior
There was a thread about 2 years ago over on Scwf .... Joe Pete in Germany first noticed it during a routine movement regulation. A few of us that owned Sumos cracked our cases open just to see for certain.
For me, both my black dialed had the engraving but my blue lacked it. The same went for a couple others that were brave enough to open theirs up.
I have no idea what it all means as Seiko never responded to a straight up email inquiring what the differences were.

Why would anyone think that "Made in Wherever" means that the object is entirely made within the geographic boundaries of Wherever by the legal population of Wherever?
Say what you want about the Swiss, at least they publicize what is required for Swiss Made marking on their watches. Loopholes abound, but we still have no idea what MIJ requires. An assumption is majority of the value along with product transformation is within Japan like most other Made in definitions, but there's always been chatter of completely foreign manufacture under a Japanese quality system can suffice.
It is what it is. It seems recently the Sumo along with several other models have suffered from chapter ring alignment issues. MAybe this has something to do with it....

My orange dial had a serious assembly issue - the hour and minute hands were out of alignment by almost six minutes. It was like someone didn't set the movement forward when placing the hands (unless these were done by machine) and then it made it past QC like that. I could have fixed it but I didn't think it should have been necessary to open up a brand-new Sumo from Seiya to reset the hands.

Chinese manufacture doesn't bother me nearly as much as the apparently decline in Seiko quality for cosmetic things like hand and chapter ring alignment. I've actually decided to not buy a new JDM Shogun from Japan just because of the prevalence of these issues and I don't want to be bothered with a return. So my money will find something else. Chinese are more than capable at making quality products. The bracelet on my Citizen Signature in my avatar is an incredible bracelet and is chinese made. The best I've ever owned. Seven separate links with different finishes packed so tight you can hardly see light between the links yet they don't bind or pinch. amazing. Its a $300 bracelet on a $700 watch that I've never seen anything comparable from Seiko JDM or elsewhere.  |

Why wouldn't anyone think Made in Japan means exactly that? If I buy an Apple product it says Made in China on the side. Should I presume instead that its made in California? So the Swiss publicize. I guess I missed the posters in my local 'swiss' AD stating their watches are put together with chinese parts but seeing as they've thrown a swiss screw in there that constitutes 40% of the value, they're really 'swiss' |
