I've been waiting for Tim to weigh in on this one, but so far he's avoided commenting. He says he loves a wabi'd 6309. So, here's this hyper wabi of a 6309-7049 from December '81. It was a professionally used dive watch in the Dominican Republic until it suffered a major seal failure that killed the movement. I put in a donor movement from a dress watch to see if I liked it cleaned up. Still thinking about which crystal to go with. Tim? Too much?

I like wabi but that one does not do it for me.
The random aged vs non aged indices and hand colors bothers me and the edge worn insert also bothers me.
I like aged lume, faded inserts, dinged cases etc but sorry that one doesn't do it for me.
And how did the outer edge of the bezel insert wear off between 50 and 30 as it sits below the top edge of the bezel?

I'm not a fan of excessive wabi, but I love that. Stick a frosted bevel flat crystal in and it's perfect. Then give it to me.

I took the insert out before cleaning everything in the ultrasonic, I didn't put it back into the same orientation I'm sure, and setting / resetting an insert changes where it sits. When that rotating ring first came in, the edge was flush all the way around. The aging on the dial is actually where the rust-stained water from the movement moved over the markers. That's rust staining. I like it personally but it's not for everyone.

I like the fading in the rotating ring insert, Spencer. Can only come with real, honest wear. Def put a new crystal on that one !

Oh hell yes, I love that one. The bezel wear really ties it all together IMO, I love it!

What a great watch! Honest and hard working! Great story behind it and a great look. Ridden hard and put away wet (literally). Definitely not a safe queen . . . more like a blue collar worker after a hard and sweaty day. I love it!

It's not 100% yet. The donor movement needs a rebuild, the stem spring is weakened from rust and needs to be replaced, and I'm going to swap the crystal. BUT despite all of that, the sealing surfaces are essentially perfect and the watch should be able to be resistant again.
Also, now that I've noticed the insert being at the wrong level (thanks Josh) I need to find a way to figure out where it was in that ring so it sits flush again.

Maybe next time before you pop the insert out take a center punch or something and mark the underside the bezel at the 12 o'clock point so after cleaning you can line it back up.
You supposed to do that when pulling driveshafts and CV shafts out so as not to cause a rotation vibration while driving.

Any 6309 that pulled its weight on a divers wrist is OK by me. For sure just change out the crystal & let her be. Don't let Tim have it, I already want his "beater 6309" lol.
