So, last October, I bought a 6139-7010 Speed-Timer from March of 1970. I posted some pictures for all to see and hopefully drool over. Several commented but it was Spencer who noticed that the sweep second hand appeared to have been painted along with the 30 minute hand. And under close scrutiny you could see the orange paint trying to bleed through. So a couple of weeks ago I sent the watch to Spencer to see if his exceptional skills as a watchsmith could bring the watch to a more correct state. He found that the sweep second hand was indeed orange and that the 30 minute hand was yellow. I had him repaint the hands orange. Here are some before and after pictures. I could not be more pleased. The first picture is the sellers picture that quite honestly sold me on the watch. This is a picture that I took once I had the watch. And here are some taken this morning after the hands were returned to their original color.

Much better. I wonder why someone would paint those?

Under that white paint, the original hands were a very faded orange, and a faded yellow. The sweep hand (orange) had (and still has) a tiny cap of shellac on the tip - no idea why but I've seen it before, and decided to leave it. It makes it look like the who hand is orange, but that's what was there so that's what's there now.
The sweep got a very thin wash of orange simply to darken down the existing but faded orange that was already there. The minute-counter hand I matched to the final color on the sweep, once it settled.
A big improvement, thanks for letting me have a crack at it.

Thanks for all the compliments! Does anyone have a suggestion for a bracelet? All I have right now is an old fake leather and fabric strap. I don't even know what brand it is.

That's a very nice model! And not so easy to come by. I've been searching for one too. It looks spectacular with the orange sweep and minute hands. Great work Spencer! Regarding strap choices, I think a 3-hole rally or perforated strap would look great on that! Just to give you an idea I have such a strap on my 6139-6012. Here's a pic I got from the internet of a tan rally strap. Looks nice.

Now you know I'm going to ask this...any pictures? ? She left the watch at my mom & dads actually - we were there for Saturday night dinner, and she left it on a counter. I'll see if I have a shot, but it looks like what is posted up above, almost identical.

Beautiful watch! Nice work, Spencer. Gotta agree...it should go on a leather rally of some kind.

Yeah...somewhat common on early 6139 Speed-Timers. Many have it, but not all. May have varied with model, as certain models like the -7010 seem to have it more often. It's another of those things that Seiko did away with pretty early on.

Fantastic looking piece, I really like that one. I'm typically always going to vote for original bracelet, but a rally strap looks really nice.

Fantastic looking piece, I really like that one. I'm typically always going to vote for original bracelet, but a rally strap looks really nice. I agree with your comment about the bracelet. My problem is I have an 8" wrist and for the most part all the old bracelets have been resized and the spare links are gone. One night while trolling Ebay I found a watch that looked to have the same bracelet or a variant as the 7010. So I bought it. Once I got it I didn't have the heart separate the two. So that watch is now with Spencer for a restore. Below is a picture of it.
