Saw this on NHK a while ago and came across it on YouTube. Did a keyword search on Japanology and found no entry so hope its not a repost.

Watching it now, quite fascinating.
edit - The watch @ 9:00 looks very familiar.
Finished watching it, that was VERY interesting...and definitely worth the time to check out. Great share, thank you!

Look igniferroque it's not seen as bad in the UK. I'm sorry but it's not racist and it's habit. I've been driving jap bikes and jap cars over here for years and I worked with the japs at Sega for years. They didn't complain when I called them japs! I don't complain when someone calls me a brit or a limey! So whats the problem? It's not I'm dropping an A-bomb on them or chopping prisoner of war's heads off or anything horrid like that!

I'll try and change my wicked ways but I honestly do not mean any disrespect from it. It might slip out though on occasion but trust me I do not intend to offend.

Twice in one day for you....in two different threads. Frankly I think it's you who needs to "come on". You've evidently appointed yourself the forum's "Political Correctness Cop". You seem to lie in wait for someone to post something you find offensive and then sarcastically berate them for it with a "seriously?" or a "come on". I'm certain Tony meant no overt disrespect when he used that term. Don't you have anything better to do?

I can either be the guy who hangs out on a forum with guys who toss around ethnic slurs, or I can be the guy that tells them to knock it off so we don't look like a bunch of louts. Guess which one I picked. EDIT: I'm sure they didn't mean any harm, I'm just trying to educate fellow members on what the world will be reading into the words theat they post here.

I am not a lout and I sure do not need you trying to educate me! Who the hell do you think you are my mother? In the UK it's not considered anything at all. It's you with the problem. As I said I worked with 'a lot' of Japanese as I worked with and at Sega's european HQ in Chiswick, London for 4 years and they had absolutely NO problem with me calling this Jap. I ran the department for christ sake! They knew it was nothing other than me shortening the word such as they did when they said Brit. Now I said I would not use the word Jap to keep you happy and peace in the world but do not belittle me as I do not need you telling me whats right and whats wrong OK!

So...you're the sole judge of who needs an education these days? This smacks of elitism on your part. Evidently you consider yourself to be some sort of superior being who has to rescue us cretins from ourselves....what gall. Who exactly appointed you the commissar of all things "right" and "wrong"? And for the record, these "ethnic slurs" you're referring to as virtually non-existent on this forum....except, of course, in your own mind. Tony didn't mean a damn thing by that and you know it....yet you felt a need to jump in and start a ruckus. As far as what forums you hang on; well there are other options you may prefer since we're so "gauche" here. BTW...Why is it OK for you to refer to us as a "bunch of louts?" Be careful now...you've crossed over the political correctness line yourself with that bit of name calling. That's it....I'm out.

Well, Jap, Nip, Japanese, Nipponese, or We had this same kind of discussion while I was a moderator of PWC [Philippine Watch Club]. One of the most ridiculous moderatorial debates we ever had (and we had LOTS of those, leading me to quit over there too!):... and POINTLESS! More Goddam Political Correctness CRAP!! You can't regulate racism (etc.) you can only hide it by OVER-regulating speech. NOTE: I am NOT saying anyone's earlier posts here were racist in any way either. We even had a member there with the handle, Happy japboy (or something very close to that) who was indeed of Japanese descent. Among others, he said - about using the "jap word" - (in response to the moderatorial chiding - from a few of the mods who weren't even SUPPOSED to be "Policing" the section in question where it was used) that he had NO PROBLEM with the term "Jap". However, the older generation sometimes did, as a "residual" of the WWII days. Thus it was to be evaluated based on CONTEXT and personalities involved where it was used. NOW, for a real "Jap" Tokei (watch or clock): seikoholics.yuku.com/topic/338#.U-QT76M_zNE
