I've never been drawn to the Monster so I've never taken the time to learn about them. I'd like to remedy that. Tell me about the Monster. There are several versions? How long have they been produced? Are they a sleeper hit or were they popular from the get-go? How long have they been around?

I'm surprised they are still around (and have been exploited to no end with 30 boutique color schemes and 15 limited editions) I bought one because I rode 60 miles to the Seiko outlet store and didn't want to leave empty handed. I'm not a fan of bracelets and the Monster is not a strap watch. Wore it a few times, MOD'd it and wore it a few more times. Never got the same wrist time as my favorites and has been worn about the same as most of my 500 watches which is a few times until the next one comes in.

Well, we all agree. I think it's a pretty awful looking watch. The bezel font is not for me, overall it's too blingy, and the lume on the hands and dial is a bit off, etc. The newer designs are better, but still.
The mods I've seen where things have been blasted or coated are better. But again, the bezel ruins it for me.
Just my opinion. Obviously there are countless fans.

I am a fan of the SRP edition monsters. I bought the SRP311 and am quite pleased with it. For me the hour markers were the biggest design improvement. Nothing says "monster" like a ring of teeth. But it's like anything, isn't it? It's just another design that won't necessarily appeal to all. I'm not huge fan of the black bezeled divers (6309, 7002, SKX007, etc.) because for me they have that same basic look. They're certainly all different but aesthetically the nuances aren't that much different. However, I can still appreciate the appeal and the history of them. It's a design that works well and many seem to like it.
Myself, I need different. I like to stand out from the crowd, not to be noticed but to be unique. The Monsters do that for me. I'm sure the Sumos and Tunas do the same for others. I still appreciate some of the crowd favorites like the 6139-6002 (which one day I need to get mine into Seikoholic's hands), but wearing the same thing as the next guy reminds me too much about the uniforms of my Catholic school upbringing.
The pleats on the chicks were/are pretty awesome, though.

I had one for a while and sold it. I was never able to warm up to it.

Like you I need education too. Of all the diver watches in my collection, I still to this day don't own a Monster. Of late though I've been thinking why not? This has been bugging me for some time now and I think it time to bring one in the fold. It's taken some years to warm up to it but I'm actually starting to like it. For me it would have to be the original black (SKX779). All others just don't appeal.

Yeah, + 1. For me though it wasn't love at first sight. I was offered mine as part of a deal & fully intended to "Flip" it from the start. So up for sale/offers it goes. Had loads of people want it. But got some silly offers so decided to keep it. Put it on yesterday morning & by last night was stoked. It's big, easy to read & as rewwwrrr say stands out from the crowd. Quite a few people who never bat an eye at my "nicer" watches (6105, 6309 etc) commented on it. Oh, & the lume is insane!! Really think it will be my "Holiday Watch" on my next dive trip. Of course, someone comes up with a decent offer then I's be interested. Oh, & it's no longer the "Monster Watch" in our house. My 4 year old Grandson Ashton has christened it "Grandads Shark Watch."

Black Monster was my first Seiko. I was originally inspired by this MKII mod: I never went that route but I did...bead blast, sapphire xtal, swap hands and dial with OM parts, and as my collection grew and I became addicted to vintage I eventually used it as a trade package with a restored/modded 7002 and a Panerai clone for a heavily modified Marantz CD player with a vacuum tube output stage. Intellectually I do miss the watch but in the end it never really worked its way into my soul the way others have (6309...6105...6139...you get the idea). No reason not to own one but beyond the original black and orange variants I have not really found any of the rest of them all that interesting.

Never cared for them so I've never spent money on owning one.
They appear popular for some out there but the watch just never ticked and boxes for me. Like David, the biggest turnoff is the bezel.

I'm no expert - I think there's two basic types, square hour markers and the later tooth shaped version. The teeth version is cool, I like them, but the bezel is a deal breaker, it reminds me of a pair of trainers not a watch. The hour hand is a little odd, but when the hour and min hands line up it looks like a rocket! I almost bought an SRP227 when Harold did his SS shroud (but that bezel), so instead I finally decided to use a dial in a mod....watch this space, I've said too much...

There's great value in the monster. Awesome case and bracelet. Spectacular lume. After a while though the little things bothered me. Poorly painted hands. Misaligned bezel. Weird step down in the link width.

I'm a bit ambivalent about the Monsters. I had both the OM and BM. Sold the BM and traded the OM for two! Monsters modded by Jay at MCWW. I have since moved the modded OM along so all I have now is the black Mud Monster.

My darling wife actually bought me my first two monsters. I didn't even know about them. She bought me the black and the blue monster for a "just because" gift. I love the feel on the wrist, the heft, the look and everything. I then got the orange and went crazy tracking down one of the limited Yellow (only 300 made) and finished it off with the red. I was surprised when I saw how many people didn't just not care for them , but downright hated them. To each his own.

I got a Black Monster years ago, on the rubber wave strap, and from the first moment I put it on my wrist I liked it. I think it was one of my first Seiko's, after having mainly focussed on Swiss watches.
- Loved the enormous hour markers with the copious amount of extremely luminous material, in a nice yellowy/greeny colour; - Loved the detail of the minutes (05, 10, 15, 20, etc.) near the hour markers; - Loved the shape of the 12 o'clock marker, the shield shape; - Loved that is had Day/Date; - Loved the red Sunday - ('Yes, you have showed me a hundred times already...' said my wife); - Loved the thick, robust hands, even the weird little hour hand with the gigantic arrow; - Loved the fact the crown was at 15:45 position, instead of the run of the mill 15:00; - Loved the strange bezel guards; - Loved the fact I could get an ISO rated 200m automatic diver for under $200; - Loved the robustness of the 7S26 movement, and the fact I did not need to worry too much that I could easily damage it; - Actually loved the rubber wave strap on this watch (I know that might be just me!); - Even though I am not a fan of the bezel, I loved the general overall look and feel of the watch on my wrist.
The monster opened the world of Seiko divers for me, and I still have the same watch, which I regularly pick up and enjoy. I have tried some other Seiko's that clearly have their DNA inherited from the Monster, but none matches that original one.
Ended up giving a Monster as present to a watch-loving buddy, and got a similar response, although after some initial hesitation.
Should it be ugly? Yep. Do I love it? Absolutely. An awesome watch, and I am sure this will be one of the designs that will survive time and will join the Seiko classic watches of yesterday.
Cheers, Hobbes.
