Simple question for a likely not simple answer . . . do we have any reliable idea on when and by whom the 'Tuna Can' nickname was first coined ? Something I have often contemplated and recently have tried to research for a definitive answer, unfortunately without success.
Please give your two cents worth if you have any solid leads or evidence, even sketchy rumour and urban myth . . . I'd be ever so grateful. Cheers folks, Dawg.

I think it basically started when someone said that it looks like a "tuna can" on your wrist. I don't know when it started tho.

Records in the Seiko museum suggest the name Tuna was first heard of in a particular grizzly murder involving 2 brothers out fishing off the coast of Maui. A storm hit the young bra's and they soon found themselves drifting far out in the Pacific Ocean. Having lost their rods and having no fresh water, after a week the brothers were in a terrible state and the younger brother began hallucinating. He was desperately hungry and thirsty and began to imagine the comically oversized Seiko strapped to his brothers wrist was not a watch but a can of Tuna that he wouldn't open and share. A fight started and the younger brother throttled his brother to death with his traditional flowered Lei. ]He was eventually found by a Japanese whaling vessel captained by our very own Serdal who speared the poor bastard mistaking him for a Humpback.Dragged onto the ship, clutching his Seiko, his dying words were 'hey Captain you got an opener?'

I remembered the term "tuna can" from early "original" SCWF forum followers...accordingly a quick search reveals this link which references the term to Evan (Cafe) having "coined" the term during a review of one of his back in 2003:
and here's a few happy snaps of some of my case backs: enjoy!

It is all a bit hazy, but the term definitely dates back to the old Not-work 54 SCF circa 2003. Others at the time called it a "hockey puck", but "tuna can" is eventually what stuck. thunbsup.gif

I agree, I was on the first forum started by Wayne Lee, and I followed pretty much all the way through to recently and I think it was Cafes review, although some current SCWF moderators will probably claim the credit wtf.gif

Thanks gents, top drawer stuff . . . it was the timeframe more than the individual I was specifically after . . . I had a vibe it couldn't be too long before the last ten/twelve years or so. Big ups to MSA, CJ and Pete . . . and Rex Rattus for the urban myth injection. cheering-clapping-smiley-emoticon
