Hey guys,
been lurking for a few months, my good mate who is also new on here, Cawfee, led me to this forum. I have to say, great work, I thoroughly enjoy reading the posts on here.
My name is George, from Melbourne, Australia. I am an electronic/electrical engineering student and I have a deep passion for Italian cars. I've been into watches for some time now but over the last year or so the passion has grown! My history is pretty poor having owned q&q's as a kid (I think I went through watches quicker than I outgrew my school uniform). For my 18th, my parents bought me a Fossil watch which I loved. It was so simple, no numbers on the black dial just silver hands, but I unfortunately lost it.
Last year Cawfee introduced me to orient and then it all grew from there! To be fair my dad still owns his first watch, which is a 1984 seiko quartz he bought himself as a wedding gift. Behind the iron curtain (where we were from) these things were the bees knees. It is still his only watch and has only had the battery replaced about 4-5 times in its life. Amazing, won't wear anything else to be honest.
So far here is my collection:
Orient Arena - I used to love skeleton watches, not so much now. But I grow in and out of love with this watch about 3 times a month. I wear it almost everyday as my 'beater' but i just love how it is so all over the place. No one ever comments on it, but I love to wear it. It keeps awesome time and has a great feel to it. Used to be on a metal bracelet but I soon changed it over because I struggle with bracelets (flat wrists). I rock it when Im either working or getting drunk.
Orient Star Classic - I absolutely love this watch. I originally wanted the blue hands, but this just got me instead. I think the simplicity of the dial is awesome. I wear it as much as I can despite being a dress watch. Nato's dress it down. People in the know comment, the other clowns think its a Daniel Wellington (which I also own...but I don't want to talk about it). The smaller size is just great and sits perfectly on my wrist.
Raketa something something - I bought this because Cawfee loves the soviet watches. I got it for $8 and when I got it I laughed and basically said WTF is this? It is so small but it has a charm to it. It is from the 50's from what I know and hand winding mechanism dies after about 18 hours. Its a fun watch and believe it or not...girls notice this one all the time. I have to wear it with bracelets otherwise it looks too out of place.
And finally my latest acquisition which needs no intro.
I bought this off forum member Tony or Cockroach. He was awesome and really delightful to deal with. The watch has now officially tainted my perception of vintage watches - because now I expect them all to be this good. I really wanted a 6138 but could not go past this. It is now on a leather nato and I can not take it off. No one knows what it is and I love that.
I never buy watches as investment pieces, but merely for hedonic purposes. I really enjoy wearing them and I think the Japanese variety just get it right for the price. One day I might donate my money to something more exorbitant - but for now I am super happy with what I have. The biggest problem is I only have one wrist that I wear a watch on and only 7 days a week so the more watches I buy the harder it is to rotate them fairly, and I feel it unethical to discriminate.
The current to buy list for me is:
Seiko 6117 Worldtimer (exactly like the one on your world timer thread).
Citizen Nighthawk (Asian/Euro)
Seiko Alpinist SARB017 (I think this looks so epic!)
+ other random cool shit.
I am no expert in watches just opinions, but I look forward to getting to know you all
Thanks for reading guys and girls
Kind regards,
George
