As the title says. I see Um on the 'bay & wonder what are they (& before you get smart don't just say SAMPLES! ) I mean are they just non working samples of actual watches? Are the bezel inserts, dial. hands usable? What gives?

They are usually just watches that are missing movements, holdings rings, etc. case, crystal, bezel, hands, dial, all good. Sometimes they come on a much shortened or "half" bracelet or strap.
Great if you come across one and want to use it to restore a beater!

Restoring a beater is the best bet. Tried to use one as a potholder...not so good! LOL

Just pop a movement in the case and enjoy it. Just remember: sometimes (not allways!) the lume can be a little weaker, Rileynp and I once talked about that, we don't know why that is, all other parts are exactly the same as the ones on new bought watches.

They are real watches, sans movements, casing rings, bracelet clasps, etc. I built a 7A28 "Alien" out of a sample case and a roached-out goldtone 7A28-7029. Attachments:

I've heard it said that they lack the casing rings, and sourcing them can prove difficult.

That is the biggest problem with them...no casing rings. It can be hard to make one watch out of a sample case and another watch for this reason. With the 7As, there really is no casing ring. But I had a helluva time making one 5246 KS with a round sample case and a square donor watch!

I once returned a Timex under warranty for cosmetic dial defects. The watch they sent back appeared to be a replacement with "sample" stamped on the caseback. I figured they just popped in a new movement or used the one out of the watch I sent in.
