After seeing Thomas' gold plated Lord Marvel 36000, I happened to have spotted one in the mall used store next to our apartment. So today I took the wife with me as she wanted to buy me the watch as a gift for being in Japan 12 years this Feb. month! This one is from 1975, 5740-8000. It looked to have been previously polished. The leather strap is a generic Marumen brand. Next to this watch was also a King Seiko from the 1973 but examining it with my loupe which I took to the store, the crystal was quite scratched up and the caseback was one of those without the medallion. So I opted for the Lord Marvel....an old man's watch....but what the heck! wristshot good by blingmeister, on Flickr caseback2 by blingmeister, on Flickr good view 5740 c by blingmeister, on Flickr

That looks very nice Thian! I would have preferred a simple silver one like that. By the way, do you know if the 5740C hacks? Mine does not (wearing it yesterday and today), and it just seems like a manual wind should. Also mine has a little washer under the crown, that seems like it has to wrong. On the other hand I was looking at another late 36,000 bph Lord Marvel online, and it looks like it has a little washer under the crown. Do you know why there would be a washer under the crown? Enjoy that beauty, and remember your age has little to do with how old you are! - Thomas

" Get it ". If it is nice also and can be a keeper, or another case back can be found to better it ..... " Why Not ". Just say to her .... , " Do you have a .... " YEN " for a watch " ? ( It is almost like a Craving for some thing. )

listen, my LM 36000 it's absolutely one of my favorite watches. the curvature of the dial that is perfectly mimicked by the acrylic crystal, and the super clean lines of the case really look terrific.the build quality is as good as Sako gets, maybe a little better in Grand Seiko but not by much.this watch has a very special place in the horology of Seiko.you'll notice from my avatar that I tossed a Rolex Oyster on mine and I believe it looks terrific that way too.if I'm wearing it and I'm bored, I just stare at the smooth sweep of the second hand.these are still relatively cheap and in my opinion an excellent buy.I would a few days ago and on the rest over the course of one full day it only gained four seconds.not bad for an old watch that I've never had serviced!

Woke up this Friday morning and saw the watch kept perfect time! hooray!

Yes, the LMarvel 36000 does have a unique role in Seiko's history and many do not know it. I read that in 1966 the Swiss made their first 36000 hibeat. Then in 1967 Seiko made theirs but installed the movement into the Lord Marvel casing, not a GS. A year later the GS came out with the 36000 movement. There were two dial models - one like mine and the Arabic font dial. I have several small watches, such as my lovely LM Special 5216 with faceted crystal, a Omega quartz etc. The Marvel is perfect to look at despite the small 38mm size.

Thian,
That's a beautiful piece! I wish all movements had a regulator like that. It's odd that a watch that beats at 36,000 bph doesn't hack.

It doesn't hack or have a date as Seiko wanted to launch the full commercial 36000 bph movement in its purest, simplest movement. The goal was to assess reliability at the new higher hi-beat rate. Or so I was told.
When I got mine it was most likely NOS it was so nice. I was initially upset thinking the hacking mechanism was broken, only to happily learn it was a non-hacker.
These really are very nice timepieces. I love mine. I'm glad this thread is showing the caliber due respect.

I did read that Seiko was kinda testing the hibeat and once it proved worthy, Seiko the following year began the GS. a quote from Ninja01 .... 3. Finally, the 5740C manual-wind super-hi-beat [36,000bph] movement was placed in the Lord Marvel. Some folks believe this watch "proved the technology" for the Grand Seiko & King Seiko 36K models that followed. See the entry/entries for the 5740C models for movement picture examples.dial closeup by blingmeister, on Flickr
