Today it's a 1977 0139-5029 Dual-Time "stem set" digital. I got a parts watch for this one in the mail yesterday. I bought the parts watch for the battery hatch, but discovered that it also had a better LCD panel and reflector. So I swapped them out. I'd love to know more about this one, never heard of a stem set digital.

The closest I'll ever come to a "smart" watch.

The closest I'll ever come to a "smart" watch. My watch is "intelligent"! it says so on the dial.

Wonder how much influence it had on the iWatch.

I have heard of watches like this one being called "stem set" in digital watch circles. In truth, it means just what it sounds like it means. Many early digitals were set in the same way an analog watch of the time would be set...by turning the crown. Apparently, Seiko thought people would be more comfortable with the new technology this way? With watches that set with buttons, the button is simply depressed and two metal contacts touch, thus accomplishing whatever you were trying to do. With "stem sets", a somewhat complex system of cams and levers is actuated by turning the crown, but the end result is the same...two metal contacts touch! As people became more comfortable and familiar with digital watches, stem-setting went away. With this one, you pull the crown out to enter setting mode. Turning the crown forward allows you to choose what you want to set. The crown "clicks" as you toggle through the settings: first the date, then the day, then hour, then minute. Turning the crown backward advances them, and a click also occurs every time something is advanced. The seconds are reset to zero by pulling the crown out and quickly pushing it back in according to a time signal. On this model, two completely independent time zones can be set this way...normal time, and "Zone II". You can toggle between the time zones by pushing a button at 2 o'clock (it is recessed). I have regular time set to local, and "Zone II" set to GMT. "Zone II" only reads in military time, normal time is AM/PM. I guess this watch is an early digital GMT watch? You can toggle between the date display and a running seconds display by turning the crown either forwards or backwards when it is in the neutral position. Pushing the crown in when it is in the neutral position activates the light for the display. Nowadays, multi-function digital watches are cheap and common. But not in 1977. Having a digital watch at all was a big deal then, never mind one that did TWO THINGS!
