I remember when I was just a boy my father telling me about when he arrived in Vietnam as a 20 year old helicopter pilot, he went to the exchange and bought the thickest logbook and biggest Seiko they sold. I’m not sure why, but it stuck with me. When I started flying at a young age, I naturally gravitated to the Seiko brand. And, when I heard the story of Col Pogue and his now famous watch, like many I was intrigued and needed to have one.
I’ll admit, I’m hard on watches. I don’t take them off when working. I fly with them. I’ve deployed with them. When I found my very own Pogue, the case was refinished and it had replacement and reproduction parts. But, it ran well and kept time like a champ. I picked mine up with a cheap reproduction bracelet and immediately started searching for an EastTech. I came across other bracelets, NATOs, and eventually settled on a presidential that I was satisfied with. However, the search for the solid EastTech never stopped.
Then, I came across UncleSeiko’s post about his solid H-Link bracelets. I have to admit, after reading that he has made and is selling them, I couldn’t open PayPal fast enough to get my order in (que the “shut up and take my money” meme). That was on the 28 October. The bracelet arrived in the mail on 31 Oct, a few days faster than quoted.
I expected to be happy, but I was not prepared for my initial impression…I was astounded. You can’t help but notice how heavy and well made the bracelet is upon opening the package. The bracelet came with two end links that are of similar high quality (unfortunately, no spring bars are included). The finish of both the end links and the bracelet itself is excellent and it fits better than any bracelet I’ve had on the watch. The links are tight and the fit is exact. It is definitely a quality piece.
I wore the watch for a full day with the bracelet and, as expected, there were no issues. I paid $50 which including the super quick shipping, but I would have happily paid A LOT more. IMHO, UncleSeiko is selling them for far less than he could easily be getting for them.
All in all, I’m a very happy customer. I would recommend UncleSeiko’s solid H-Link band to anyone who wanted a replacement that was at least equal quality, if not better and heavier duty than the original and definitely better quality than any replacement I’ve seen on the market. I can’t wait to take it flying.
