I'm selling a watch at the moment on the bay and in the first few hrs this happened. I enquired to see if it's the same person but I'd have to put a formal report in. I've sold to one of the bidders so don't really want to make anything of it as it all went fine. Just seems like they have inflated the price to reduce other interest. Do these tactics work or if somethings going to sell will it reach a certain price regardless?

If you are the seller which it appears you are as the bidders names are shown it would only be shilling if you knew ma98774 and told him to bid on your auction to raise the price.
When you see small bid increments like this it is someone trying to guess the current high bid which makes no sense early in the auction as all it does is create back and forth bids trying to jump each other and is usually done by inexperienced bidders instead of waiting until the last minute and putting your best bid in. I hate spotting a nice item that is cheap and then 2 dumbasses start going at it early on and ruin my penitential good score.
If I was another bidder in your auction and saw this bidding history going on I might be inclined to accuse the seller of shill bidding.

That's what I thought. I really don't understand the point of shill bidding as an item is likely going to sell for as much as someone else is willing to pay. I doubt very much that it would change the outcome, as long as you have a few people bidding.

I doubt very much that it would change the outcome, as long as you have a few people bidding. Non reserve auctions that start at 1¢ or $1 are like the lottery and drive the number of bidders and potential sales prices higher. No one want sot pay retail and most BIN only listings are priced as such. Everyone bidding thinks they can own a Ferrari for $20 because they are the 2nd and current high bidder 2 minutes after the auction starts and then calls the seller to say how an they pay sine they "won" at $20 (don't ask me how I know cuz that is another problem in my life history ) Relisted items due to non paying bidders sell for a whole lot less the second time around as the under bidders and followers smell something fishy going on. See my Past images from past auctions threads for confirmation. Hopefully some kid who logged on to his father computer and bid a bunch of shit up (yes I heard this excuse for many deadbeat bidders at work) isn't one of the 2 idiots bidding on your aution. You could always block them both from bidding and ruining the outcome if they aren't serious but you also don't want to block a potential serious buyer since they are the only 2 bidding on your auction currently. Thank goodness for drunken spell checker who made this post possible

Thank goodness for drunken spell checker who made this post possible Made my day. Anecdotally I often get higher if I have to re-list an auction. Which always surprises me. Having said that, I only do lo price auctions as I believe my watches are only worth what people are happy to bid up to. People do and say weird things- it's surprising when people with relatively high feedback do it- for example my 135 tiny bidder.

Well is does happen, I was away over xmas with the missus, sat in hotel bar when she gets an ebay notification on her phone, she's been outbid on an Xbox with games - wtf?! Teenage son at home has been on her laptop, she's left herself logged into ebay, and he's 'accidentally' bid £100 on a used games console. Luckily it sold for £101.

Josh, you made me laugh. I have had all those Ebay bidder problems, the last one was this weekend when some prick bid on one of my watches at the last minute and then sent me an email to ask me to cancel the bid with 30 seconds to go. WTF...I was at church anyway so did not get the email until the auction had ended, luckily he was outbid at the last second. This did piss me off because it could have been another non paying bastard to deal with and a relisting with the previous bidders looking at the bidding history and thinking somethings amiss.
I was going to email him and blow off but have better things to do, but I have blocked him from bidding.
