I love the MM. I probably will get one when the stars align one day. In your opinion, is it a $2k watch? I probably will driop the extra cash and get the LE.
In the sub $3k space their really is nothing that can touch it, yet I still feel like it may be over priced. My SKX kicks ass, I love it and it cost me 150. My 6139 also kicks ass as we all know and it cost me 300. Im on the hunt for a 7a28 and 38 and those won't set me back more then a few hundo each. SDGZ013 can be had for 2500 and that is a ridiculous mech chrono that I will own one day.
Is it the best non GS that Seiko makes?

Have you had one on your wrist yet? I recently had the chance to put one on mine, and I cannot really say that I want to have it after that. It is so thick - "top heavy" some would say. With a SKX007, you have the crystal, the chapter ring and the dial and that's it. The MM has another layer, so that you really look into the watch. It gives it the distinct "porthole" look.
Too thick for me. Build quality is superb, though!

I have a sbdx012 and I personally love the MM, and my favorite seiko I will never own is the 6159-7001, so upon seeing the LE come out I couldn't pass it up with the gilt hands and bezel. It is thick, but it feels substantial which I like. I grew up diving in the 90's with a back up depth gauge on my wrist as my computer flaked out a few too many times, and the MM wears nothing like that magnitude, but it reminds me that at heart it is a tool watch, and a diver! Personal taste plays a big part in ones comfort with that, but keep in mind it's not a giant I think it's 40mm, makes a sumo feel like a plate on the wrist. Hope you can try one out!

I bought mine a couple years ago, and don't regret it. It is thick, but it's damn sexy. I didn't buy new then, nor would I if I had to do it over again. Prices have really come down, nice secondhand pieces have been listed for $1400-$1500...which isn't bad. It's a big enough purchase that I'd probably like to feel it on the wrist first. As far as getting a GS instead, that's your call. I didn't, because I'm not really a dressy watch kinda guy. That said, I can certainly understand the attraction.

With pre-owned prices dropping below $1500, I think the MM300 is a good option if you don't have a lot of watches. It wears tall/top-heavy, and if you cycle through a lot of watches then it feels awkward - while if it was a daily wearer you'd get used to it pretty quickly.
I have a lot of quibbles with it beyond the top-heaviness, though. The printed logo and date window, the rounded lume frames, the non-stoplight seconds, and 5 total lines of dial text - they're all worse than the watches that inspired the MM300 - the 6215/6159.
I still like the watch - it's good, very good, but I don't consider it great.

I use to wear mine for a couple of weeks straight to be properly acclimatized and to be able to fully appreciate it. It feels very odd at first when I switch from my 6306 for example. Very top heavy indeed. But when you get used to having it on your wrist its a great watch in my opinion. I would say it's definitely a $2000 watch with incredible build quality and great looks. You will not be disappointed. /David

How's the bracelet feel? Beefy and worthy of a 2k-ish watch?

It's got a solid feel. The ratcheting clasp is great for micro adjustments during the day. Personally I find it of matching quality with the watch head itself. The only negative thing I have to say is that the clasp, being titanium, is a real scratch magnet.

How do 001 and 017 differ?
And 017 and 012 are essentially the same except for the obvious cosmetic differences?
All 8L35s?

Differences between the both is the diashield treated case and bracelet(more scratch resistant), prospex logo on the crown, the new improved luminous material in the indices and that some movement parts are made with higher precision resulting in a more accurate movement.(Or capability of a more accurate movement after regulation). It still uses the 8l35. Also the rubber band has a metal keeper on the new models 017 and 012.

I have always "wanted" a MM300, but it was hard to justify the "almost $2000" expense for such a "mundane" Seiko dive watch. Then the SBDX012 came out, as a limited edition, with the gold highlights, for about $2500. Okay, if I want a MM300, obviously this seemed like the one to get! Now, I do plan on buying an SBDX001 soon, as well. But it will probably be a pristine pre-owned example. Bu when I had a chance to grab a mint SBDX012, I "jumped". - Thomas

I have the original SBDX001 and like you was anxious about the price. I found a used one in excellent shape for <$1,500 after taking my time searching. I wouldn't sell it for less than $2,000 after owning, I love it that much. Is it a thicker/taller watch, you bet. For me however, that's not an issue as I like a heavy, substantial watch. If your every day watch is a Seiko Cocktail Time, then this is going to feel like a chunk. If however you're already a diver wearer, I don't think it's an issue. I wear professional attire on a daily basis (button down long sleeves) and I have a shirt or two that it won't slip under, but it isn't an issue.
Get one, whatever variety attracts your eye, you won't regret it.

I was never a fan of the Marine Master or the original 300M. Sure the original has it's place in history and the MM pays homage to it but it just isn't the watch for me. I do think the MM hands with cushion case 6309 dial is a great combo especially on the PVD Tsunami I should have bought. Seiko has a lot of great designs but they don't always put all of the right pieces in the same box at the same time. The good thing about Seiko is most of their pieces can be interchangeable. Don't get me wrong I am all in for a bootleg MM MOD with a genuine dial and hands fitted to an SKX for a street corner price of less than $300.
