In all its years of production, it only came in black/black - no pepsi?

Depends on the 6309 you are referring to... The 6309-704X only came in black. It's younger brother, the 6309-729X came with a pepsi variant - the 6309-729A. I believe there was even a rare orange variant, the -729B

Not an idiot, but maybe a bit lazy with your research. The -729X is the slim cased variant, very similar to every Seiko "everyman" diver since the cushion case, e.g. the 7002, SKX007, etc. See here: "old" cushion case style: "new" slim case variant:

I think so, but I have also read that the gold surface on the bezel rubs off or fades to silver.

Well, what good is a pepsi bezel if you don't like the case? How much do you need an "original" that has been manufactured that way? You can get very good pepsi bezel inlays from Yobokies for the 6309 (they are the same on both variants, so you can even buy an original if you find one), if you prefer that case style.
