Will create a thread about the work done here along with everything else I'm having to do however I thought I'd do a quick post with a poll on here in the main section to see what thoughts you have. I bought the watch that contained this dial. Many of you might recognise it. Here is the dial before and when I eventually managed to wrestle it from the case: Here again just now after taking a load of time trying my best to salvage it: The rest of the watch was caked in rust. Best things are case and bezel / insert. I've been cleaning the movement all day. As I said I'll continue this tomorrow. Let me know thoughts about the markers. Whether the dial is any more salvageable. A relume? Etc etc. Not as happy with what I have to do but I will get there. Oh and anyone got a spare 6105 dial that is perfect I can have!?

That looks great. How did you get rid of the scratches on the dial?
Regards

Yeah, that's an amazing result. I'm curious about the scratches too.

I'm just sorting some stuff out and I'll get some more pics up shortly.
Luckily they weren't scratches. I simply used a bit of spit and some rodico to remove whatever it was!
Anyone any ideas about how to remove the rust from the markers!?
I'm thinking about a tiny amount of tea on a cotton wool ear bud thing and trying to get the surround done at least.

Ok here are some shots of the dreaded beast and and some shots of the parts after I'd managed to take it apart. Hands here look OK, service rerplacemrent hands or those taken from a 6139, however traffic light hand looks great, and is. Look at the rust! This was a nightmare to set free. The crown was stuck as the keyless work was entirely seized. Eventually... Everything apart and sitting, waiting....for life again. Going through each section and cleaning as best I can. I wish I had an ultrasonic cleaner! Going to have to invest when I have some more avilable funds. On that note... I shouldn't have gone for this damn watch. But hey ho, here we are! Case looking sorrym, but with potential. Ouch this main plate has had a bad day, week, month, year, life... Wrong order, but here is is as getting deeper into it Here are some shots of how it's coming along. WISH ME LUCK, I NEED IT!

Better question is why on earth would you stop, your results so far are simply amazing.
Keep it up and lets us see your progress, these types of restorations are the best; a lot of elbow grease and you will have quite the looker.
Thank you for sharing

Keep it up, it'll be a cracker in no time.
With all that water infiltration, I'm having a hard time believing those hands are original to that watch.

Nah they're not Tim. Defo 6139 or service replacement hands. Probably the former. The seconds hand is weird. It's perfect almost NOS.
Will take a pic two secs...

Here are the hands. Could be the service replacements you sometimes see? The degradation of the seconds hand looks in keeping with the watch damage. Why replace it after it was pretty much ruined. And with the seconds hand looking great then possibly all replaced years ago with a proper service? No idea... Anyways the work on the movement has started and will update. The screw holding the balance wheel in place has sheered and has obviously not been able to cope with the water. Thus leaves me with a balance wheel that needs a better cleaning and a balance bridge that is stuck with the wheel. I dipped the wheel into one dip equivalent and it oscillates OK. Not great...but this was a test with it in the mainplate and with some lubrication on the jewel hopefully will provide enough amplitude. Doubt it. And I am thinking this would be the part that defo needs replacing if it comes together and wants to tick. The other issue is the mainspring barrel. There is still power in there and it still winds when I've tried to spin it carefully on the arbour but I haven't attempted cleaning these yet and reassembling. I might just buy a new mainspring if again it works. And of course I can source one. I have some hour and minute OEM hands in excellent condition on their way so these 6139 hands will be spare. The only other issue I have so far is that the calender wheel is a little mucky but I'm not going near that as the print will just dissappear.

I have no doubt that you'll get it all sorted, I love progress threads like this.

That dial is a heart breaker. Maybe you could try rubbing the rust off with a toothpick? I mean it can't get worse right? If you were to repaint the indices, You could mark the lines with ultra thin masking tape, then brushing it with a very thin model paint. Link to store with very unfortunate name, but they do ultra thin masking tape - www.jammydog.com/

Looking good. Maybe some sort of automotive body repair rust neutralizer would work on the dial. I would say check Eastwood but it seems they only have POR15 for gas tanks or it by the gallon. search.eastwood.com/search?w=rust%20neutralizer

Cheers Adrian and Josh.
Yeh I'm at a loss with what to do with it to be honest. I just want to forget about it for now and get it working and cased to then see how I feel about it.
Been rubbing it with Rodico since and much of it came off this way, however the orange residue left on the Rodico has started to lessen considerably and this stuff is just solid.
The markers are coming off basically in the end..bahh... I dunno..
I can't see any chemical being used that would just remove the rust. The paint someone said looks to have been reapplied at some point but I believe the water that got in smudged the paint and then turned to rust.
I read about Birchwood blue and rust remover doing a good job on a dial. Maybe I try that after seeing if more rodico rubbing doesn't get me anywhere.
Guy
Ps the masking type was an idea I had too but that link gives me something to think about. Ty Adrian

Thank for the kind words Louis! I'm just hoping now that there isn't too much that's needing to be replaced in the movement. Here is the dial now. Wondering whether all the markers simply need removing. Trying with Rodico eventually just pulled them off but I think it looks slightly better. Issue being the dial looks off centre due to the markers on the left of the dial leaving a gap to the edge..
