I so want a Marinemaster. But having sharpened my teeth on Swiss watches before I was enlightened by the awesomeness of Seiko, I am having trouble pulling the trigger. I absolutely love it but, and I hate to do this, if I held a brand new Rolex Exp 2 (insert any 8k steel high end watch here) in one hand and a Marinemaster in the other, would I be underwhelmed with it in person? Grant it, one is 7k and the other 2ish.
Is the Marinemaster in a whole different stratosphere compared to an SKX?
Why despite my love for Seiko and total respect, can I not get past the spending 2k on a Seiko mental hurdle that is entirely misguided.
Anybody wanna set me straight?

In my opinion the only way to find out is to hold one in your hand, because those things are way to subjective. Not long ago I went to an AD wearing my Marinemaster to have a look at the Tudor Black Bay (IIRC it's a +/- 3k watch) and I was underwhelmed. Then again I am not saying that the Marinemaster is worth +2k but good used ones can be found for less than 1.5k and that's a kind of bargain imho. However, the Marinemaster sbdx001 or sbdx017 is a very nice dive watch with a unique design, all parts are made inhouse and it's partially hand assembled. It's not perfect, but kind of cool and sexy... just my 2ct

Totally agree.
I have to get one in my hand.

I have yearned for an SBDX001 but beyond the investment two things stop me. The first is the business of the dial text. I think I could get past it given the other things I like about the watch. The other is my fear of it not being comfortable.
It is a sort of short chunky watch and you just never know. I have been to the Seiko boutique in NYC and they said that it is not sold by AD outside of Japan. There is a GS AD here in town and they do not have it either. It is just not one of those things I could buy, even used, without ever being able to try it on first.
If anyone who owns one is in driving distance of Orlando FL (<100mi) I would happily buy you lunch for the opportunity to try it on...
EDIT:
For those who own one, how does it compare for comfort on the wrist to a standard 200m slim case, or a 6309-704x, or a 6105-811x? For reference my wrist is 7.5" and I find all of those cases very comfortable.

The MM is is a top heavy original Japanese watch worth adding to the collection. Some hate the bracelet but I find it just fine on my 6.5 wrist. For awhile I had it on various leather straps but it is on the bracelet again and in the rotation group. I have a Omega quartz Bond, Omega X-33, Omega Moonwatch and other fine watches. The MM compares to them all IMO. My Squales 500m were $800 or so and really fine watches too. I have the Seiko Tuna but think it is kinda overrated as I dislike the curved crystal catching reflections. The Orange Monster I have is unique so it stays in the collection. I think you have to decide if heavy watches are compatible with your acceptance or not. How does it compare in comfort? Both the 6309 and 6105 are fine watches but the feel of the MM is much better once you accept the weight factor. To me it doesn't take long for the wrist to get used to this watch.....even the huge 45mm Marathon JSAR fits fine after about a minute of strappint it on!!! hahaha! dial brim topside strap by blingmeister, on Flickr mmaster katana girl by blingmeister, on Flickr

I don't have an Explorer, but do have a modern Submariner. I have to say I wear my MM waaaaaay more often than I wear the Sub. The watch just feels, right. Rolex is great, make no mistake, but for 1/4 the price used, it's far nicer in my mind. Go handle one, you'll love it, especially the micro-adjustment clasp.

I have no MM300 "in-house", but I had the opportunity to try one for a bit at a local watch meet (I actually wore it the better part of an hour to decide if I was going to buy it). It sits very high on the wrist. I mean, it's almost 15mm in height! To get your shirt cuffs over this thing, they need to be oversized quite a bit. Add to this the rather small dial and you get a nice porthole sitting on your wrist The quality is really nice. I handled some Rolex, Omega and other watches that evening and I think the fit and finish is comparable to those. Maybe even better that the 5 digit Rolex models, but that might be because they were worn for a longer time. I decided against it in the end, but I kept coming back to it, because it really is a special watch. Let's hope the fellow doesn't bring it with him on the next meet.

That said, the MM is very comfortable once you get used to the weight. I'm with you on the dial text; I wish it was more in keeping with the 6159. If you're ever in the Boston area, I'd be happy to meet up and let you take if for a spin! Myles

As much as I love the 6309-704x and 6105-811x cases, I actually find the 6309-729x/7002/7s slim case to be more comfortable than either. :-)

The weight does take some getting used to, but I don't think it's too over the top.
