Just tackled my first mainspring service. Barrel out of a 6309 (I bought 3 Junkers in a job lot from Ramon and am trying to make one decent one). Cap off; arbor out; mainspring out. Not quite as controlled as I would have liked but not too bad. Everything in the US for 8 minutes and also fine cleaned the barrel with peg wood and rodico. Then a bit of 8217 on the barrel walls and some 8201 on the barrel floor. (I think that's right but there are sooooooo many opinions out there).
Then the fun part, reinstalling and winding the mainspring by hand as I don't have a winder yet. Took a few attempts but I got there. I'm not sure how much grease stayed in the barrel but I seemed to get covered in it! Arbor back in - which was trickier than I thought it would be until I studied it and realised how it connects with the spring - then a couple of blobs of 8201 on the spring and the cap back on.
In all honesty, I probably did a terrible job, but I'm on cloud nine at the moment!

Woop! Well done, Pip. Not as horrifying as I bet you first thought it would be?! Satisfying once done and finally click the lid into place..:. Pat yourself on the back! You have to have at least one experience of it going boing and shooting out. Dangerous as fo(k...

Nah man, I need to get a number 7 winder. I can't be doing that by hand every time! Wanted to try it by hand once though to see if I could do it.

Great, and it seems you didn't lose an eyeball in the dismantling process either. Always a bonus

I really don't mind hand winding in at this point, now that I've done it so many times, but it would really help to keep from displacing the grease to use a winder I feel. Definitely next on the list. #7 plus whatever size I need for the tiny women's watch mov'ts.

I'm not sure how, but when I washed my hands afterwards I had even grease on the knuckles of my left hand! It was a great lesson in how far a small amount spreads though, very instructive for not putting too much oil or grease in a movement.

I'd forgotten how nice a manual wind watch is since selling my prs-5 a couple of years ago, but it's nice to wind the Hamilton I just did knowing I put the ms in by hand. It's made me want to have another manual wind watch, though...

Well that didn't come up in any of my searches or I would have had a sniff at it.
