Seiko parts seller in the Phillipines affectionectly refered to as Ramon (goes by "thewatchcollector" on ebay) recently launched a new gray-black inner rotating ring for the 6139-600X Pogues. In the past I reviewed his "yellow" version and gave it a thumbs down since they don't fit right. As a hobbyist for $17 USD shipped I just had to take a peak so I grabbed one from his first batch.
First comparison is the ring top side that you see on the wrist:
- Genuine rings are black, silver paint, lumed triangle pip (prone to falling off) @12 o'clock/60 minutes. The top surface has a series of nearly imperceptible radial concentric rings. Numbers are not raised, just painted on with excellent graphic tolerances.
- These AMs have molded raised markings. Allows for roller painting their tops. Gray paint, not super well applied as there is splatter at the bottom, but these critiques aren't really noticeable on the wrist. No lume on the pip. No radial rings, just a flat surface though slightly wavy under magnification. Grayish black plastic gives a sense of vintage without that awful gone gray faded look. Good choice of resin color.
Dimensions (mm):
OEM Genuine Ramon
Top OD. 30.12 30.06
Bottom OD. 32.22 32.14
ID 26.02 26.07
Thickness 2.66 2.76
Some careful placement when centering the Ramon AM ring was required to get the movement in. The first attempt its smaller bottom OD kept it out of concentric with the case so the movement couldn't push in where the teeth were stick out, and I could not just move it over so I had to disassemble, re-center, and reassemble.
Second install, properly centered, and it turns great just like an OEM!
Time to replace your dirty, gray, faded, broken old one? This is a very good new option. I pronounce them a worthy Aftermarket alternative when you can't get your hands on a proper original, this is a pretty decent product.
At $17 it's a bargain, NOS rings are many times that price. (I still have 3 OEMs so I guess my parts drawer just dropped in value!)
So here you go, can you tell which is which?
