I’ve always resisted updating my perfectly good phone, but now it seems that some apps are no longer supported. I’ve had this Samsung Galaxy S3 (Android 4.1.2) since mid-2012, had it repaired once, but it has worked very well.
Messenger stopped working a while back, which was no big deal. Now the eBay app needs updating, but the new version is not compatible with my phone. I don’t buy much through my phone, but browse occasionally. Not enough to motivate me to get a new phone, but it is a bit annoying Has anyone else has this experience?

Wow, that IS old. But fear not, you can upgrade your phone - google a bit for "Lineage OS", a custom ROM you can put on your phone which replaces Samsung's old software. It might even be a lot faster afterwards. ...you loose all your settings and apps, though. Backup and reinstall. Edit: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LineageOSThere are so many variants of the S3, you'll have to find out which one you have. Usually there's a model number on the sticker underneath the battery. Find it here: wiki.lineageos.org/devices/Then follow these instructions, but be advised that it is potentially dangerous and no one will take responsibility if you brick (damage so it can only be used as a paperweight) your phone. e.g.: wiki.lineageos.org/devices/i9300/install

What can I say? I’m a fan of vintage gadgets. I hope replacing the operating system wouldn’t detract from its future value as a design classic. Thanks Jonas. I probably won’t go through with the upgrade. It still works well, and I’d rather spend that money on other things!

I've been into Windows phones since Windows CE (remember that?) Compaq iPaq (remember THAT?) tethered to my candy bar phone.
Had an early Apache PC6700 (first ever merged personal digital assistant with a phone) it was amazing. I'd do things that blew people's minds (bought my son's basketball team a full set of bballs on ebay during a practice session) etc. now if you aren't doing this stuff all these years later no one can understand why not. Ha !
I've jailbroken iphones, re-flashed Windows Phones, hacked Blackberry security patches, XGA Developer code, the whole nine yards.
Now? I just use what the phone has, update whenever I can, and get all grumbly when the 'new and improved' version sucks compared to the one it replaced. Can you say Yahoo! Mail ?
My Samsung Galaxy S5 is way overdue for a replacement but like you Rossr I like no monthly payment and it works as good as when it was new.

Well Mr.Jones HiBeat , I finally upgraded my phone. My poor old S3 started flickering badly and had major problems charging. I bought a Galaxy S9 - which was half the price of an S10. Seems pretty good. Hey, and now I’m off the 3G network and on the 4G!

Wow getting an extra year our of it seems like you did get your monies worth...I hate the idea of ever getting a new phone....I wish Nokia was still in the mix and I could grab a candy-bar again...phones today seem huge...sort of like watches. Hopefully like watches the trend will go back to more realistic sizes...

Congrats 4G is necessary to live today!
I just got a Google Pixel 3. Love it Pure Android. Replaces my old old S5.
Instead I almost grabbed the Moto z3 for it's 5G capability because we might have 5G installed in our neighborhood later this year. But you can only get 5G if you upgrade to an unlimited package and s $200 add-on module. And the town is fighting all the 5G "nodes" they have to install all over the place. So I passed on it. 4G is good enough for my needs at least as of today.
Congrats again you are going to love it.

Funny I had 2g on my unlimited plan with Verison before they stole it back...I would listen to music on it all day long without a bit of buffering. Now with Sprint I have 4gb at 4g 2g after and I don't think I can get through a song without it buffering at least once sometimes twice or three times...Pretty poor if you ask me...Give me my Nokia 5100??? back.
