This 7005-8062 is sporting another hand-made strap gifted to me by tritto, and it’s one of the most comfortable straps I’ve got. I think the dark brown really complements this particular watch, as does the stitching detail. One of these days I’ll get round to reluming the hands...

More JDM quartz 'junk'! Today it's a 3803-8000 from October, 1974. This one is all original, and is in great shape. Seiko had three lines of basic quartz back in the early '70s: the low end QZ, the middle range QR, and the top line QT. This watch had two issues right out of the box. Firstly, it was missing it's case back gasket. Second, the case back (it's a snap-on) looked like it had taken a serious hit. It actually appeared that somebody had tried to use the wrong tool...a hammer or something...to reinstall the case back after removing it. It was deformed to the point that I had to use a crystal press and a punch/hammer to get it straight again. I hate it when gaskets are missing. Not only does it mean I have to source another one, but the original isn't even there to get measurements from if the OEM gaskets are discontinued (and they usually are). If I can get a part number I can usually find a gasket that is close, but on obscure 40-year-old JDM quartz watches like this casing info is hard to come by. I went through a number of gaskets I had on hand trying to find one that fit. Couldn't do it. Then I noticed an 8229-7030 sitting on my desk, which I had bought along with this watch and was turning out to be a parts watch anyway. I pulled the case back gasket out of it just for shits-and-giggles, and lo and behold it fit perfectly! That gasket is an FH2882B0A, btw. All it really needed other than that was a light cleaning. Or so I THOUGHT. When I removed the bracelet to clean it, one of the springbars came apart and half of it shot off into the ether somewhere. No problem...these are just straight 18mm spring bars, and I have lots of new ones. The new spring bar on one side locked in just fine when I went to put it back together. But the one on the other side just WOULD NOT. No matter what I tried, it wouldn't engage. After yelling and cussing at it for a while, I finally just decided to put the old spring bar (the one that DIDN'T fly apart) back in the watch. I noticed when doing so that this particular spring bar was bent on both ends, as though it needed to be bowed a little in order to engage on this case. The old spring bar went in just fine, but the end of the bracelet was now loose and had an unsightly gap. The contrast between this sloppy side and the nice, tight side with the new spring bar was too much to bear. "Fu@k it", I thought...if this watch requires a bent spring bar then I will bend a NEW one and put it in! So that is just what I did. I took a pair of pliers, slightly bent one end of a new spring bar, and it slipped right in. Never had to do that before. Anyway, here it is! These early quartz watches just oooooze quality. This watch was about 80,000 yen at a time when a new mechanical Hi-Beat GS was under 50,000. The 38-series was getting a bit long-in-the-tooth by 1974, but Seiko still seemed to be pretty proud of it even as they were introducing newer second-generation quartz calibers below it.

Following Michael again...! This for my tennis outing this morning. (No hat, sorry!) Something else when I’ve mowed the lawn in a bit and cleaned up. (There’s another thread coming with what the something else will be).

That;s possibly the nicest solar I’ve seen, love the busy dial and bezels.

Selling this after sorting it. Just relumed the hands and airbrushed the missing paint on the seconds hand. Kinda don't want to sell it now but I'm skint.
