Surprising excuse to cancel a transaction

Here's an odd one.
On Saturday I saw a job lot advertised on gumtree for $250AUD. I spied a possibly nice gold dialled 6119 6023, a 7005 with 6105/62MAS hands and a couple of other possible fixer uppers.

The next day it was on eBay for $250 or best offer. Figuring the 6119 was probably worth $150 cleaned up with a new crystal I offered that and my offer was soon accepted and I paid.
Today I got the following message through eBay.

Did he chuck them in the sink with the washing up?
I told him that most of them were now useless and I'd give him $50, he seemed disinclined to accept but hasn't yet refunded my money.
I wonder if he's got a better offer through gumtree and is just making up the washing business?

Could be, or maybe just devoid of functioning brain cells. That’s a weird excuse though!

I just got a refund. The bugger gave eBay the reason "customer requested cancellation".

It's ok, there was a decent chance it was going to be a marginal deal and I was wondering if I'd made a mistake anyway. I have a lead on something cooler (and more expensive) I should be saving my money for anyway.
