I'm new to this group and hope to learn as much as I can here. I have been a collector of watches and clocks for the past 40 years or so. My interest in watches began when my grandfather gave me his pocket watch shortly before his death. The watch quit working a few years later, and my desire was to have it repaired. Problem was, everywhere I went I was told that it could not be repaired, or the parts were not available etc.
Eventually, I found and joined the NAWCC, made friends with local collectors and repairmen, who taught me enough of the basics that I was eventually able to purchase the tools and parts needed to service and repair the watch myself. The watch is still in my possession and is among the most cherished in my collection.
After many years of pocket watch and clock collecting, my main collecting interests shifted toward wrist watches after my fathers death when I was given a cigar box of old wrist watches that he had owned, worn and eventually threw into a box when they quit working. Among those was a non working Bulova Accutron tuning fork watch that I had remembered him wearing in the 70's. I was able to get it working, and it still runs well to this day.
I really don't have a favorite brand or style of watch that I collect, but I love all tuning fork watches, anything mechanical, and in the past few years I've started collecting Seiko's which, due to the many variations available have me quite confused most of the time. That is something that I hope being a member of this group will help me sort out. I look forward to making friends here, and most importantly to learn.
