Just bought this for lunch money...direct from Japan. Anyone know what the inscription says? Not that I really even care. Looks like some kind of company award. Engraved Japanese is just so COOL! Best part is the inscription is on the back of a TWIN QUARTZ! The guy must have done a good job! It's from 1984, I am assuming? Not at all my style, but the caliber, inscription, and price made me pull the trigger. Same Japanese seller had this weirdo 5606. An "emblem"? Also nice, and he wanted just a little more lunch money. Snagged it, too.

It says : " Wax on, wax off ". Sorry, I'll try to send your case-back pic to my Japanese sister in law & hopefully, she'll get back to me over the weekend. I'm actually intrigued too because I recognise the second to last Kanji symbol. I've seen my name (David) written in Kanji & that character looks very similar to the first of two characters that form my name. The Japanese write their names with the christian name after the surname, so I wonder if it's a presentation inscription to a westerner called David ? I'm probably completely wrong as just a tiny, subtle difference to a symbol that looks the same to our eyes, can mean a totally different word.
Love the dial texture on the 'Emblem' dial.

Those are very cool! Congrats!
As for the inscription, I can't help but it made me laugh to my self. I thought "buying a watch with a Japanese inscription is sort of (but not really) like those people who have Chinese characters tattooed on them when they don't speak Chinese. I always think about some poor bugger going into a Chinese restaurant or to China Town and having all the locals start laughing. Thy think their tattoo says "One bad ass MF'er" in Chinese but it really says "One great big butt hole" or something else that is totally unflattering! Or the girl who thinks her tattoo says "Spirit of the Butterfly" but it really says "One huge slut"!
Oh . . . did I get off topic??? My bad!!!
Congrats on two real cool adds and can't wait to see what the inscription says. My guess would be it's for 15 years of service!

I'd go along with the 15 year service thing. Hopefully, we'll find out soon. My email of the case back pic has been received by Kumiko san, but she's only seen it in miniature on her phone so can't translate it 'til she can look at the computer screen at home.

Thanks, man! I had assumed a 15 year service award. This would have been an expensive watch when new, so I am curious about the kind of person it went to...after "only" 15 years.

Just got an answer, I'll paste a bit from her email : " This is no problem! It said 'a gift. 15th anniversary of the establishment of Soka University". Soka is an unique religion based on Buddhism. It looks like this university has been established since 1971 so the watch might be produced in 1985/1986. Only if you are interested in it I've found a link about Soka below. www.sgi.org/I mentioned to her that I thought I recognised one of the characters as making up part of my name in Kanji & she goes on to say : "In Japanese, we have 3 different alphabets and when we write Western word, we use an alphabet called "Katakana" and your name is デイヴィッド. Perhaps a person who wrote your name in Kanji chose 大 (pronounced "Dai") from the several other Kanjies pronounced the same as this one and I think it was a great choice! "

The watch has a 1984 serial number (the 9641 being introduced in 1980), so celebrating the 15th anniversary of a school founded in 1971 makes perfect sense. Japanese is soooo cool! happy1

I like inscriptions too - and inscribed watches tend to go for less money in Japan than unmarked ones Here are a couple of examples - looks like the same inscription around the '50' as Cobrajet's: This one is intriguing - lovely script around the back, with crude engraving in the centre, of the date and what I guess are someone's initials: Stephen
