Being as most say an ignorant American, and I see ignorance as not a negative, thought it is thought of that way, but just not knowing something. Ignorant isn't the same as being dumb...although there are things I'm dumb about...still can't get amplitude up on the as1686...
Anyway the Mexicans I work with get a group of 10 together and ever week they put $100 into the pot, and every week someone else gets the pot. I guess there is even a name for what this is called. I forgot what it was. Anyway they say that they could not save $1000 on their own because things come up in life and leave you short. I get that, by being in the pool, and they pick random order as to who gets which week, you have access to $1000, I guess they allow switching spots...Lets say you're number 6 and week 4 you need a water pump on you car, you might be able to switch with the guy at #4 so you had the money for the repair. Some say its best to be near the end other like being first.
Is this a Mexican thing? Do other country's workers do something similar?
While in Mexico I met a girl (no this isn't an intro to a dirty joke) who made cheese. She and I became friendly and she said that she had gotten together with other women in the community and they created a type of co-op. She said while they all made cheese and competed against each other, they all made their cheese a bit differently and so they had their own customers. My numbers may be off so don't quote this, but of the 7 women in the co-op, one had a lot of cows, and some had very few. Cows need to be milked daily or they will stop producing until they get knocked up again. Anyway as I understand it each day they give their milk to a different member in the co-op. Now that person has plenty of milk to deal with and make cheese, the next day they are giving their milk away and don't have to make another batch of cheese. This allows all of them to be able to sell more cheese if they can find the customers and be able to buy more cows...
I get that, I don't get what the coworkers are doing, since they are just using the money? I have yet to hear that anyone of them at the end of the contract has put $1000 into an envelope. Maybe someone has but if so I'm not aware...I see it as a good way to force save but it seems like a long way around...
