One of my other hobbies is fountain pens in which I have dabbled, repairing, buying and selling, for 20 years. I am slowing down on it now and spending more on watches...time and money.
So I troll the auctions looking for both items.
On one auction there's a guy who regularly lists a WANTED old fountain pens in which he shows around four pictures of the typical pens he's after.
So, yesterday I thought I would see what he offers for one particular pen....a Waterman Patrician 1930 which is clearly shown in one picture.
Messages:
Me: Hi, Clearing out my dad's house I’ve found a pen same as the bottom one in picture 2. It look new in a box. What’s it worth. Thanks
He (within 20 minutes): Hi Thanks for your enquiry. I normally pay £20 for that model in its box if that helps
Me: I send him a link of one sold by a vintage pen company. It's like this LINK (shows a pen sold for £1195.)
and yes they do sell for anything from £700 to £1500.
He: Dont know if my earlier message got through I thought your pen was one of the cheapie mottled ones which I do pay £20 for. Your fathers pen is a different item altogether and my apologies for mistake I will post better photos on my "wanted" ads. I would be interested and how much are you hoping for please?
I have not yet replied but DID point to the correct pen which was easy to see and detect.
Some mark up he was expecting.

There’s a few words that come to mind Don, most of which aren’t suitable for an open forum...

Yes for sure.
He's removed one picture but not the one I referred him to.
I'm working up my reply. Thinking about....I have now found 2 more of the same.

This should be added to the "pisses me off" thread. Few things bother me more than thieves. People trying to get over on others. Knowledge is power and never enter into a negotiation with first knowing all you can. The fact that I have seen watches so over prices (as we all have) that I wonder if the seller actually know the market value and have pointed it out only to be, in most cases, told buy it or not!

I just finished cleaning and filling my Pilot Vanishing Point and my wife's Cross Metropolis. I wonder if watch geeks tend to be fountain pen geeks, too.

I never use my old Mont Blanc Quicksilver. HS graduation present. Should have asked for a Seiko, would have probably been a 6309 or 7548! (1981). Sure wish my dad's Parker 51 hadn't vanished into the mist. Odd that I have very strong associations of it with my father (and his very unorthodox left handed technique) but my older sister barely remembers it. The barrel was "Dove Grey". He probably bought it in the mid-1950's.
