Our current Lenovo Ideapad 320 is next to useless - takes an age to boot up, slow as phuk, and can’t be upgraded to Windows 11 as the processor isn’t compatible - and apparently it can’t be changed as it’s soldered to the motherboard.
So, I’m looking for any recommendations on a sub-£400 (could maybe stretch a bit more) Windows OS laptop, around 128GB SSD, 14” screen preferred. SD card reader a bonus but not a must.

Increase the budget a little and take look at the T series direct from Lenovo. Real Keyboards! Or at least as close as modern laptops come. Bought a pair of T490's last year for me and the wife. i7, 500Gb SSD, 16GB ram, 14" 1920x1080. They have been great so far.
correction: They are i5 but still more than adequate to task.

They’re on Amazon UK here, refurbed, for within my budget. We don’t use the laptop that much hence why I don’t want to spend a lot but I don’t know about buying a refurbed model.

I got a Lenovo Edge E330 which I bought solely for writing (island type keyboard and reviews were good) but ended up being my main laptop and still is. It has served me 10 years and a new SSD prolonged its life even more. Batterly life was about 8 hours when it was new, now maybe 1-2 hours. Nowdays I often keep it plugged which doesn't bother me at all. Over all, It has been amazing value for money!
So it seems that we all like Lenovo and refurb models have already been mentioned, so maybe it's yet another Lenovo?
My choice for simple everyday tasks, writing and some multimedia would be: High end Lenovo with atleast 2 memory slots, Intel i3 for longevity, 13-15" display for battery life and agility, as many slots as possible, nice keyboard. SD card slot seems to be a rare thing these days (my Edge E330 has one).
ThinkPad E14 and E15 look good and I think they are successors to my Edge E330 and the price seems to be about the same. Personally I would go for E14 or E15.
I own both a smaller Edge E330 and 2020 17" Lenovo E595 (got it as a gift, I would not have bought such a thing) and I find myself using my smaller Edge 90% time for everything including media. Especially reaching keyboard mouse and overall manouverabilty are so much nicer on my Edge than on the bigger one. I really like Edge's agilty which allows me to have it around when fiddling with watches if I need to look for instructions etc.
I don't like the current development where you can't remove the battery. Also Lenovo has introduced sub tiers on their former cheap, medium and high categories which makes it bit more harder to choose a proper machine. But I guess it's the same deal with all manufacturers.

Update - I discussed the issue with my neighbour (who is a bit of a whizz with these things) and he recommended fitting a new SSD hard drive. Turns out the factory-fitted hard drive was goosed - it was permanently running at 100%. So I spent £75 on a 1TB SSD drive, my neighbour did some wizardry, and now I have a laptop that boots up in under a minute. Amazing. As to Windows 11 - we’ll wait and see.

I was about to suggest that, but since windows 11 was on your list I thought maybe you want new one. But anyway, great news. Less waste and "new machine". That's exactly how I upgraded my E330. Difference is truly nothing short of amazing compared to an HDD.
