Day 9 of the October WRUW daily theme.

Today's theme is "Freestyle Friday Wear whatever watch you want”

In college sports some call it a "Gimme" game or a "Cupcake" or a "Tuneup" game AKA you know you are going to get a win no matter what.

If we were having a Contest or better yet as I always wanted a CHALLENGE it would be a free point sort of like that free square in Bingo.

For those in training for the 10th Anniversary CHALLENGE next year one of the contest rules has always been make sure your watch is showing the correct date.

While this month is only for FUN and the first week has been a Cupcake week for those in training for the BIG GAME you may want to read the rules and try and implement slowly (so that you don't strain yourself and pull something) some of the previous contest 2 or 3 part themes in your upcoming posts for the rest of the month (or everyday going forward)

And for those who are looking ahead to "Buy the win" the 10th anniversary CHALLENGE may be all new and maybe you will have to make a forum friend and both you you do the came challenge on the same day with the same watch and props with each of you in a different country in a different time zone 12 hours apart

Or maybe you would just have to post the current days newspaper in your post.

After a while I had gotten into the world of watches, I started hunting for a super accurate watch.

I came across all the modern HAQ pieces from Bulova, Tissot, Seiko etc., but soon came acros the fact that Seiko and Citizen had already been there and done that. Better yet, I was able to buy a beautiful vintage piece for the same money as the modern equivalents and even better still, It would be possible to regulate the vintage pieces. 

However as a poor student, I couldn't justify the purchase, that was until I graduted with a master's degree in Theology from University of Helsinki (no, I'm not a priest and yes, in Nordic countries theology is executed as a science) and I wanted to reward myself with something nice and commemorate the occasion. So I went and bought this Seiko 9923 from eBay. 

I photgraphed it today with a facsimile of the oldest Finnish hymnal from the late 16th century, because my thesis was about hymns and I have quite a few hymnals...

Hymnal fact for the Sunday: Amish hymnal, "Ausbund", is the oldest protestant hymnal still in regular use.

Didn't want to risk the date change before 9 am.

Another one of my late dad’s watches. My sister bought this for him, can’t recall if it was for his birthday or Christmas present. I replaced the strap earlier this year as the original was way past its best - another 19mm lug width…

You know I never really got into gold watches, but man that is a stunner. I guess it's the sterile white dial but it really pops. And a nice reminder of those who have moved on to a better place.

This contest has been so much fun, but makes it difficult to deal with the excitement of a new box arriving from Japan with goodies in it to share here.

I just can't stand to wait any longer on this one (well, I leaked it yesterday...) so here is one of my top grail watches I've been after for awhile:

An original 7015-6010 Time Sonar with translucent brown dial and lime green sweep chronograph hand!

This was also the first display back watch from Seiko and it has a very unique black color oscillating weight.

Funny enough I recently discovered that was marketed to "Junior High School" aged kids as an "Affordable" watch. These snaps belong to Adrian-VTA and come from the "History of the Seiko Speed Timer" by Sadao Ryugo - a book I need to find a copy of! Looks like I need to hunt down a Seiko wrist strap compass. That won't be difficult at all, right?

...and I'd have to agree on it being for kids, the original strap (rarely ever seen!) juuuuust fits me.

Another favorite beach watch

A watch that was gifted to me by a mate; with hands donated by the good King Louis Longbike as the ones when I got it weren’t as good. And a strap that coat just a few quid that I think goes so well with it all. Plus my aged pooch, in the local woods, having a stretch of our legs after my sons rugby festival earlier today.

For freestyle Friday Sunday, I am going off the rails, for a trip into Bonkers-town. Here is one of my Grail watches. The Patek Philippe World Time, model 5230G. The G is for white -G-old.



Oh no wait, sorry, let me adjust the focus.  Here it is:



This is the Hong Kong dial version (my fav), which was changed to Beijing later in the production run apparently because of pressure from the Chinese government. This model was discontinued earlier this year (or late last year). This is top shelf craftsmanship and apex watchmaking IMO. There is not a single detail of this watch that was not thoughtfully executed. As a huge fan of the world time complication - this is as good as it gets. The enamel dial and chronograph versions cost more, but this is my favorite in the range.





The hour hand on this model is the shape of the “Southern Cross” constellation, or so everyone says online. (Don’t ask me to tell you where that is…) This replaces the scissor hand(s) of the prior model (which I also LOVE). The guilloché medallion at the center of the dial is what I think makes it much more attractive (to me) than the prior two models. It is jaw dropping in person. I was not sure how to feel about the lack of a seconds hand, but have grown to really appreciate it - a separate seconds sub dial would detract from the design here, and a center seconds (like the world time chronograph version) would also seem too much IMO. This is both a buttoned up and a laid back watch. No need to know the time to the second when you know the time in 24 time ones at a glance. Everything else is a rounding error. And frankly at this level, you probably have at least one bodyguard (wearing a technically superior G-Shock) who knows the time to the (atomic-clock) second anyways.

A very short history:
Invented in the early 1930s by the Swiss watchmaker Louis Cottier, the mechanism at the heart of the World Time watch allows for the simultaneous display of the time in the 24 time zones, as established by the 1884 International Meridian Conference - which was also the origin of GMT. Patek worked with Cottier to develop the first wristwatch with this complication in 1937, referred to as the “Heure Universelle” (HU). God knows what those are worth today! Unlike the old Seiko World Timers (of which I also have a few), this one keeps everything in sync automatically, no need to adjust a manual cities bezel to read the time, it is all part of the auto-works.

This modern interpretation of the “HU” is a hand-finished marvel. This one is cased in white gold with alligator leather strap (don’t try and import that into the USA) and Calatrava cross deployment clasp (also in white gold). The crown also sports the Calatrava cross. It has an exhibition case back putting the jaw dropping caliber “240 HU” on full display. The micro rotor (22k gold, again with Calatrava cross), which is something to behold on its own, allows you to take in the rest of the movement, unencumbered. In there you will find 33 jewels (14 fewer than my Red Omega from Oct 2). The movement beats away at a standard 21,600 bph with an equally standard 48 hour power reserve. But, just look at it!







Postscript:
An important clarification is in order. I do NOT own this watch (YET). I didn’t see that as a qualifier here - and this is a watch “I WANT”, which I believe is equally in line with the “WEAR WHATEVER WATCH YOU WANT” theme. This is a close friend’s watch, that I have borrowed. There are about even odds that I will buy this from him some day (when he gets that call for an Aquanaut). For now, he is wearing it in and keeping it warm for me.

cd_god - here is what Ming requires to confirm ownership - if you bought one of their watches second hand (likely from a flipper).  I keep meaning to do this for my Ming, but i need TWO phones - one for the picture and the other for the NYT website...  Ughhh.  And no, I don't get the newspaper anymore.
