Anyone here near Memphis?
OK
It is October 16th (somewhere)
Day 16 of the October WRUW daily theme.
Today's theme is “Wear a watch that doesn’t say Swiss Made or Movement Japan (and the many spinoffs)” on the dial at 6 o’clock.
Timex watches from the 1970's said Great Britain.
Didn't the early Dan Henry watches shown here by members say England on the bottom of the dial (Google images say they no longer say anything at 6)?
I came across a brand the other day that said Australia at 6 but can't remember what I was searching for.
So wear your watch that doesn't say Swiss Made or Japan on the dial at 6.
HOWEVER it must say a country at 6.
No movement / dial codes only nothing at 6.
If you want to slack I guess you get half credit for a Mov't Singapore or Mov't Malaysia SKX if you only want to do the bare minimum.

Difficult one today. Nearly all of mine are Seiko or Citizen and most that aren’t are Swiss. The Chinese ones don’t tend to advertise it in the dial. But eventually I hit on this one which I got in a lot and got working again (although the day/date is a bit skewed) for my son. Who never wears it. So it went back in my watchboxes so that I can never wear it either! Hong Kong is of course now under Chinese control but at the time this was produced was, I’m not sure of the correct term, under British Protectorate? Something like that. So not Japanese or Swiss. And it says so at six so a box ticked that I thought I would fail to achieve.

I have a handful of watches displaying the country of manufacture on the dial that don’t say either ‘Japan’ or ‘Swiss’. I started off with this Smiths Baby Dreadnought - However, then I remembered ‘GREAT BRITAIN’ isn’t actually a country - it’s a landmass. It’s known as ‘Great’ because it’s the largest island in the British Isles, housing the countries of England, Scotland and Wales. And the United Kingdom comprises Great Britain and Northern Ireland, whereas The British Isles is made up of Great Britain, Ireland, The Isle of Man, The Isles of Scilly, The Channel Islands, and about 6,000 other smaller islands (such as the Isle of Wight, Shetland Isles, Hebrides, Orkney, etc.) Ok, geography lesson over. The Baby Dreadnought is out, as is my Smiths Baby Willard. And my childhood Timex - GREAT BRITAIN again. Almost everything else is either ‘JAPAN’ or ‘SWISS’. But not my two Michel Herbelin. The one that was my 21st birthday gift off my parents needs a bezel gasket, so I’m wearing the one they bought me for my 50th -

In German media the term 'Vereinigtes Königreich' is seldom used. Normally they speak of 'Großbritannien' while on the street and in the pubs it's simply 'England'. It's the same with 'Holland' - nobody here speaks of the 'Niederlande' which would be correct. Going further. Is it the Que... äh.. King of England or Great Britain or the United Kindom, the Seven Kingdoms (or even more?). Thanks god we got rid of our Kaiser years ago... - he fled to Holland, Utrecht to be exactly which isn't part of Holland to my knowledge...

My only non-Swiss / non-Japanese conspicuously marked watch dial. It's harder than you think to hit this one today, I'd guess because if you were not using a Swiss or Japanese movement you didn't want people to know about it!
My 1980's vintage green dialed Slava 2427 - The C.C.C.P. ended in 1991!

Well, since it has to say a country at 6, then I’ll have to go with my other Russian: As an aside, this sticker on the dial theme has gone off better than I could have hoped. My (three year old) grand daughter now asks everyday what watch grandpa is wearing - and expects to see a Halloween sticker on there. I am being told I may have to source Thanksgiving and Xmas themed stickers next… With that technical qualifier out of the way, let me share another watch that I believe qualifies for the original theme, before the “must have country on dial” curve ball…. One of my favorite micro brands that is neither Swiss nor Japanese… This: Ming Thein started the “MING” micro brand of watches in 2014 with five watch enthusiast friends in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia . Their short history (in their own words) here: www.ming.watch/about-usTheir first watch, the 17.01 was released in 2017, and sold for around $900 USD. Those now sell for $3,000-$6,000 USD on the secondary/used market. The brand’s trajectory has been one of exponential growth. My MING is a 27.01 - the second generation of watches from MING, and a modernization of their design language. MSRP - if you were lucky enough to get in on one of the two small batches (each sold out in minutes) - was about 4,000 USD. Here is their write up on this model: www.ming.watch/products/ming-27-01-ultra-thinA few things I really like about this watch. First, I find that the aesthetic is unique and highly remarkable at any distance. I can spot a MING from across the room. Second, I think the execution on this one is excellent. The dial is a play on empty space and the whole watch is an exercise in minimalism - with extreme attention to detail. It is a very wearable 38mm, and only 6.9mm thick! The hollowed out lugs further accentuate the minimalist concept, and add to the unique aesthetic. While I think it would have been very cool to see this whole dial lumed - I also appreciate the restraint. Their early attempts at lume application were not great - but since they have done some spectacular things. It is powered by the MING Caliber 7001 M1, a heavily modified ETA 7001 movement. It is a manual wind, adjusted in 5 positions, and gives about 48 hours power reserve. And it is beautifully finished. This is a Malaysian manufacture watch, using a custom movement based on Swiss parts, but I don't think they would qualify for the SWISS MADE dial notation. Also there is just no place on the gorgeous dial for such petty things. Here’s a list of the watches they have made to date: www.ming.watch/collections/archiveAnd here are the super limited special projects: www.ming.watch/collections/special-projects-caveEDIT: cd_god - are you sure there was nothing in those gold plates about "Micro Brands"? There are some cool ones I see around here some times. EDIT 2: The Ming above is my wife's watch - a fact she is proud of - and not happy at the omission... those are my hairy arms and ugly hands though

I decided to give this one some time as well. Actually it qualifies for yesterday's theme as it took me quite some time to find it. Braun AW20 from around 1992. In 2005 Procter & Gamble took over Gillette who were holding the majority on Braun since 1967. Soon after they stopped making watches and sold the license for watches & clocks. In 2010 a 'new' Braun watch line started - based on the original design with Chinese movements. In 2021 the BN0278 appeared with an automatic movement - made by Seiko.

So far I've turned a negative into a positive on this watch with DYI regulation.

Day 16 No Swiss or Japan on the dial. I think I should protest this one a bit...When the challenge was first suggested in another thread, it was made clear that the list from 2015 is what we were following...Now someone has added yet another curveball...Requiring a country other than to be on the dial. I’m certain my Hamilton Talbot made in 1963 is before Hamilton went Swiss, yet it isn’t marked...I’m sure I have an Elgin or two in a box somewhere that were made in Elgin Illinois USA but don’t ever recall seeing them marked as made in the USA? I was saving this for another day so as not to stack the deck with Double word scores, giving others a chance to at last come close to winning. I will offer this since I don’t have any watches actually have a different country of origin listed on the dial. I’ll let people guess what the rest of the watch looks like. And no, it didn’t make the dollar bill famous but close. There is a stry behind this but I'll wait until I post it later in the month.

I had planned on going with my trusty choice from the last time but I found a couple more by accident.
Seem this isn't so hard
This one hails from the magical kingdom of Indiglo.
You can find the watch factory by looking for the warm green glow around it.
It can be seen for miles round and kingdoms over.
Then there is this one from the good ole USA.
And my go to from last time is my 1974 Caravelle made in West Germany.
The date is broken unfortunately and is stuck on the 18th.
