It is October 28th (somewhere) Day 28 of the October WRUW daily theme. Today's theme is “Wear your best Ebay (or swap meet or boot sale) score / deal watch”
Anyone here ever have some crackhead come up to them while they were at a corner store on the Northside and offer to sell them an alarm clock for $1?
You can substitute "You" for "Them" if you want to play along from the suburbs.
Those were different times almost 30 years ago.
Has it been almost 30 years already
Or use whatever pronouns you want to identify yourself as since that is the new thing.
I identify as "The motherphuker you dont want to piss off" and "You owe me Money?"
3 degrees the next week when some crack head comes up to you and tries to sell you some shit.
Maybe that will be a point in the 10th Anniversay Challenge.
Anywho I didn't buy the alarm clock for $1.
If I would have known it would have been relevant all these years later maybe I would have bought it.
Maybe he was a time traveller from the future and the alarm clock was a time machine.
I guess we will never know.
Wear your best as in "lowest price paid for a high value" watch or $1 alarm clock.

Hard to choose between Seiko 7a28-7020 white dial, which cost me initially 300e, but ended up at 0e and this, which cost me 20e to buy and spent 80e on spares (new case). This, however, I think is rarer(?) and I think I lucked out more with this, as there were no other bidders for it.

I found this in a bowl of watches in a "resource recycling" shop - stuff that is diverted from ending up in landfill. When I saw the $10 (that's about $6.50US/£5.5 at today's rates) price tag I couldn't pay fast enough. A polish of the crystal and some new pusher gaskets was all it needed.

That reminds me of my co-worker, who systematically goes through 2nd hand shops and has found some amazing deals. For example, he has acquired these three under 5e: - Hexagonal Bellmatic with silver dial, 2,50e (which your watch reminded me of) - Texas Instruments Starburst LCD, 4,50e (check it out if you don't know it, crazy watch from the 70's, with a lithium battery!) - Seiko H127, 3,50e All in good condition! He is not WIS, and I have told him, that he has a good taste!

Easily this one: the Sportsmatic 5 - first Seiko with the '5' on the dial, build from end of 1963 to mid 1964. I won the YJ auction at 1¥.

I can claim a $10 deal, but this one stands out for me. A very odd-shaped Leopard Super Beat 10 (or 36000). I think this was about AUD$80 for a very clean model not often seen. I guess it reflects the popularity (or lack there of) of these watches.

This is going to be a tough day isn't it? All these amazing deals get me all wound up!!!! I think my Bulova Oceanographer worn earlier this month for colored dial day is probably my best deal for a wide audience, but I think my Seiko RC-1000 is probably my best deal for the niche collector. I picked up this 'not running' watch (but got a battery compartment shot first) for $80 USD. The thing that sets it apart is that the silk screened arrow buttons are pristine - this is very difficult to find. These wear away quickly with use. I see these watches on Ebay for hundreds of dollars when running and in good condition, and they push $1000USD when boxed and inclusive of cables and software.

When I trawled the charity shops in Australia last time I was there in 2016, there were absolutely no deals to be had. That’s pretty much par for the course here in the UK as well, certainly for the bigger national charities as they tend to have an ebay store. My sister did pick me up a 7S26 dress watch, boxed, for £20 in her local charity shop one time, but that’s the only occasion I’ve picked anything up. I’ve had a few decent deals on ebay over the years, but this is the stand-out for me. Boxed, with papers, and originally bought in Poland (with ENG/GER day wheel), the hammer fell at a shade over £56 for this SRP773K1. It was listed under some obscure coin category which is why I guess it fell under the radar.

Today's Seiko golf tip of the day: noting how fast your partner's ball leaves his putter will help you gauge the speed of the green. I picked this one up off of Ebay for $5 back in the day. It was a store display model and the crystal was cracked. I had my local watchmaster install a new crystal and it has been working fine ever since. I really wanted one the Seiko "Alpinists" that wasn't really an Alpinist that looked like this one (I can't the model number now) but couldn't justify spending $250 on one when I already had this one for $5. And of course the last time I saw one of those Seikos for sale they were selling for $600

Like a few of us I have a few, some more bargain basement than others. I’ve got some Swiss chronos that I’ve bought for good prices. Anyway, I’ve decided on this one which came to me a a bonus in a package I bought, the chap threw it in for free as it kept time very poorly and I’d told him I was just starting watch tinkering so he thought it Luke be a good practice piece for me. And it’s still one of my favourite watches. Built on a base level 2824. I was actually gifted the mesh by a very good bloke on another forum too!

Two deals come to mind; one from perhaps 20yrs ago and one from 1yr ago. I bought this modified 1st gen monster for around $125CDN ($92US) I think; And last year my local Seiko AD offered me his pre-owned SPB153 for $797CDN ($585US) which was a smokin' deal I think.. Today I'm wearing this hand cranker...

Happy Friday fellas Since all of my G-Shocks are packed, except for these two, there hasn't been much to share with you guys lately. I expect that by the middle of November everything should be unpacked and I will be reunited with my babies 😎 Officially, I'm wearing the 5610 today... 💪

Not sure which of my "deals" I could call best. I recently posted my $80 pawn shop 6105.. then there was the new Ecozilla (non-running) for 99 cents... Oh, and a old school Casio square GShock also for 99 cents. Or the like new A826 "Astronaut" for $30. Or a non-sushi- Here is another pawn shop find, a well loved Doxa with original BOR for $89.99
