Christmas ‘22 was a deliberately low-budget affair in the Leffe household as there were/are much more important things needing to be financed than gifts neither of us really need. The final day of the year is also my birthday, and Mrs Leffe was very intent on buying me a new watch. I’d deliberately stayed away from the on-line sales in case I was tempted, so nothing was on my radar. But then I remembered an email I’d had from Marloe Watch Company in relation to upcoming January 1st price increases. I already own one MWC watch - the Morar Sands - which I very much like, so I headed over to their website to see what they had available.
I was very quickly taken with the Sceptre, which was going up in price from £349 to £399 in 2 days time. I just needed to decide which one I preferred…
MWC release their watches in batches, generally in the low hundreds, and you’re able to pick your own serial number from those that are left. They also offer a number of different strap options so you can customise your purchase - the Sceptre has 4 silicone options, 3 worn leather, 2 worn canvas, 2 ribbed leather and a bracelet. Each strap option is shown with the watch so you know what it will look like. I ended up choosing the ‘Commander’ variant on ribbed tan horween leather - and hit the ‘buy’ button.
A few days later those nice people from DHL knocked at the door and handed me a rather large package.
I pulled on the box where it says ‘HELLO’ in the lower right corner.
Removing the magazine (which I still haven’t read…) reveals the contents -
I must say that the quality of the packaging and the watch box is first-class, certainly at this price range. Inside the box the quality continues -
The booklet gives all the technical specs about the watch, as well as details about the design inspiration behind each of the variants. Underneath the booklet is a card detailing the technical specs and serial number -
You can see what’s what, so no need to repeat it. The underside of the tray is pretty neat as well -
And the watch itself -
Again, very well presented. Yes, I know it’s only a watch box and cushion that will no doubt end up in the loft with all the others - but it’s classy.
The ‘Commander’ was the original design in the Sceptre range, with a deep blue dial and chapter ring beneath the blue AR coated sapphire crystal.
The skeletonised hands are also polished blue, with luminous in-fill. The seconds hand is white with the counter-weight in orange.
The case is matte blasted 316L stainless steel with a rifled grip on the bi-directional bezel and a screw-down crown. The bezel action is crisp in both directions with no alignment issues.
The Sceptre has a display case back, so you can see the Miyota 9039 movement powering the watch. 24 jewel, automatic with hacking and hand winding, 28800 bph. It averages around +3spd. The winding action isn’t the smoothest but is typical of Miyota movements.
At 12.65mm high, it isn’t the slimmest of cases but it easily fits under a shirt cuff. The ribbed horween leather strap is incredibly comfortable from the outset, not at all stiff and just the right thickness. It also comes with quick-release springbars.
My wrists are relatively slim at 6.75 inches but this doesn’t feel overly large. And at 76g it’s certainly not the heaviest of watches.
The design is certainly eye-catching. The dial is uncluttered with no day or date complication and the dial markings are all very subtle and understated. Nothing at all is too ‘in your face’.
I wore the Sceptre for about 4 days straight when I got it, and I was more impressed with it every day. I really think MWC nailed it with this one, and am not surprised that the Commander variant is now sold-out. Even at the increased price of £399 it’s great value and I’m very grateful to Mrs Leffe for treating me to it.
Here’s a link to the website (note to mods - I have no affiliation whatsoever to Marloe Watch Company).
