Gents;
When not wearing a screw down crown mech watch I unscrew the crown. Is this a good or bad idea? Are they still somewhat sealed from humidity and dust?
Thoughts….

No problem with that. If the seals are OK the crown is supposed to keep out moisture even if it isn't screwed down. I almost never screw down the crowns of my divers anyway, no reason to. So the crowns in the watch box are all open.

What is the reason for storing the watch with the crown unscrewed?

I'm quite averse to leaving the crown unscrewed or fully screwed in. Unscrewed in means the crown is at risk of catching on something or if watch falls, the stem might bend or at worst break. Half screwed as I don't have to do a full unscrew cycle when it's time to wear the watch. As mentioned above, if the gaskets are good, moisture shouldn't have a chance of ingress.

What is the reason for storing the watch with the crown unscrewed? To me it’s to decompress the spring and not compress the gasket. But I could be wrong.
