Why not epoxy a nut on the caseback and use a long spanner for leverage? Then you can remove nut with no damage to caseback or movement.

I believe what petermone is showing us is that the threads on the case-back had collapsed on that watch so there was absolutely no hope of unscrewing it. The cut is a relief of the material to allow you to effectively peel the case back out of the case band. Both parts are going to be lost in the process as the thread damage is likely to be reflected in the case band too. So as mentioned, if you've got a movement and dial worth saving in a case that is hopelessly frozen shut this would be one way to recover the internals.

Works on exhaust systems as well when you are trying to relieve the inner pipe (AKA caseback threads) from the outer pipe (AKA case)
I knew I was one of them scientific engineers and not just redneck smart from hand me down years of experience don't need no fancy looky book school knowledge
