I just saw a listing on WUS....guy is selling a rubber Omega Planet Ocean strap with a deployant....for $400.00.
I mean...for Pete's sake it's a rubber strap with some white stitching on it....and it costs as much as some watches do?
Educate me....
(BTW...I'm no strap virgin....I've bought some nice straps in the $50.00 to $100.00 range).

No idea my friend. A few years ago my wife purchased this Baume & Mercier for Christmas.
This model also comes on a very awesome stainless steel mesh bracelet and I figured I'd order one so I could switch from leather to stainless. When I called to find out the price I was blown away to hear that they wanted $850 for it. For the leather they want $350. Needless to say I passed on both.

I can understand some vintage OEM straps bringing a premium, but not the brand new stuff.....unbelievable.

BTW...that's a beautiful watch.

I was very Pi##ed of when I contacted Tag Heuer in Melbourne then Authentic watches in the USA, My Tag Aquagraph "Out of date now" was head only when I purchased it so set about getting a stainless steel bracelet and if the costs were ok the Rubber strap for it as well.
Well the Stainless steel bracelet was 800AUD from Tag in Melbourne and 550USD from Authentic watches and the rubber strap was 300USD. The real bummer was I needed three extra links for the bracelet to fit me so add another 150USD plus the 65USD they wanted for post from the USA, so 765.00 for a "Folded" stamped Tag Heuer bracelet. I have known thieves in my life but these people are the masters of it.
In the 3 years I have been posting for a WTB - stainless steel bracelet on WUS and other sites I got one reply from a guy in the USA with one for sale, it was stretched and badly worn out, it was 2 links short from new and he wanted 350USD for it, I politely said no thanks and have my Aquagraph on a really nice German "Bear" bracelet. from here as they have XXL Straps and Stainless Steel Bracelets for big wristed buggers like me.

Why does a plastic distributor cap for a Ferrari cost more than a plastic distributor cap for a Toyota? They are both just pieces of plastic with a few metal contacts cast in, right? Simple...
If you can afford to spend $200,000 on a car, then Ferrari feels you can afford to spend $500 on a plastic distributor cap, THAT'S WHY.
And that's all there is to it.
Same with straps. If you can afford a $5000 watch, the manufacturer of that $5000 watch feels you should have no trouble affording a $500 strap for it. This is why I do not buy $5000 watches!
If Omega parts cost what Seiko parts cost, why buy a complete Omega? Why spend $5000 on a complete watch when you could piece one together with spare parts for $450? By making parts as relatively expensive as the complete watch is, Omega (and Ferrari) are protecting their products. And their brand.

Same goes for those darned US$250-400 Swiss Tropic straps meant for vintage Subs...

I agree 100%
I have been saying for years "If you can't afford to maintain your Lexus don't buy a Lexus"
Why do I say it?
Because my boss is a cheap ass and buys all of these wrecked luxury cars at the auction for $3K off wholesale and ends up spending $2500 to fix them but now his ride looks like some alley mechanic did the body work and the title is still previous salvage branded.
And then when you're POS Infinity won't start and I have to go look at it and ask why doesn't the steering column tilt? Why are all of the warning lights on the dash lit up? Why does the ignition switch stick? Why doesn't the drivers seat move?
Oh it's always been like that and he has the nerve to insult my truck.
But he can go buy some $1500 22" monkey wheels for it because the ones that were on there were not ghetto enough so he looks good driving around while everything else is broken including the front differential.
Hey the cv shaft is falling out of your front dif.
Oh let me look on the internet. Oh it looks like there is know problem with that. Just throw some bearings in it.
So I put some aftermarket bearings in it because Infinity will only sell you a new carrier because bearings won't fix the design flaw. I tell him to change the fluid in 2 days so that the metal shavings get flushed out. He doesn't 't do it and 3K miles later the bearing is out of it again.
Oh just pull the front diff and shafts out of the truck since it's summer.
6 months later because he doesn't want to drive his Escalade that has been sitting behind work for a year its going to snow the next week so now it's wait til the last minute to find a junkyard diff.
