I bought this just before Christmas and dropped it while changing the strap. It stopped and I thought I had killed it as the hairspring was damaged. I put it away and was prepared to write it off, but then managed to get this for only £13.50, bought on a whim in the hope that it would be useful for parts for the other one. The movements are very similar. Mike (PollyC) offered to try to fix it for me and succeeded very nicely. It's running very smoothly and is keeping very good time. thunbsup.gif Thanks Mike.

Ah, the veritable Chinese 'standard' tongji movement.
Back during the cultural revolution, the Chinese Ministry of Light Industry dictated that all watch factories would produce this movement. They also had to produce the parts so they were all interchangeable! For the most part this is true but some of the factories did make higher grade movements that the parts may or may not have swapped so easily.
The tongji is a solid calibre movement that was refined a lot in order to meet the demand of interchangeable parts. This resulted in a movement that can perform as well as many hand winders from far more expensive brands :-)
It shouldn't be difficult to restore the donor watch either.

Thanks Pete, very interesting.
Mike did say that the original movement was better quality than the donor, and the original plan (which I tried myself and it worked for only a few hours) was just to change the balance assembly. However although the balance assembly from the donor watch fitted, the staff was too long so the balance would not turn when the bridge screw was fully tightened. So he cleaned and oiled the donor movement, changed the hands and dial and and put it all back in the original case.
It's running at about +2 mins per day.
