I guess it all depends. If we are talking Quartz, def the Grand Seiko. As for an Automatic, it would really have to come down to what model of GS and what Swiss watch. I just recently worked on a Grand Seiko and fell in love with it. So for me as of right now, I'd say Grand Seiko. thunbsup.gif

Given the choice if the fund's were actually available , how many member's would purchase a Grand Seiko ? Or would you buy a Swiss timepiece of equal $$ value ? Dude, GS snowflake is first thought, but then I don't wear dress watches often.

Ya know Spencer, the snowflake is big enough and has enough presence that it really doesn't have to be a dress watch. (Get one, don't wait, buy it, it needs you, you must obey....)

That said, I'd dread being in the same room as a snowflake for sale.

As some of the guys already said, I'd go for the design and look (and to a certain extend the history) rather than the brand. I'd probably prefer the 5513, Speedy or Reverso over the average Grand Seiko. embarrassed-smiley-face Had a 5513, wore it 3 times (even though I told myself if I spent that much on a watch I would wear it everyday) and sold it. (and of course my photo won't upload after 12 tries)

Paid $2100, sold for $2400 2 years later.

^^ Agree buy a Rolex used at the right price & you shouldnt lose $$ . While I won't go into detail until the deal is done I picked up a Rolex Datejust case and dial no movement crown or hands from someone on the Timezone forum who sold a few a week. The story was that the movement was the same as the Sub so people would buy the dress watches and steal the movement for roached water damaged Subs. After some research I found someone selling them on Eaby with some ETA movement they got to work with the case and crown and stem. I bought one, went to my watch guy at that time and said make it work. A few weeks later he said he couldn't make it work. Then by coincidence I ran into master watch maker Noah (he hates it when I list his full name with Seiko together in a post as he shows up at the top of the Google search and I tried to tell him only teenage girls Google themselves) who lives 5 miles away and if he can make a 6309 movement into a hacking GMT movement and a reverse running 6309 he is the one to make it work for me. However since he works at an authorized Rolex dealer he said in good faith he couldn't MOD it for me. At first I thought an even trade for a Stargate would be fair based on what I paid 8 years ago. Then I said ask high, get haggled low, and meet in the middle so I said trade for a Sumo (which I have no interest in because t is too big for my wrist but could flip for cash) so hopefully I the deal goes through and I either like the watch or can find a buyer. Moral of the story: as much as you may have personal dislike for a certain brand or product you can still make a profit. PS: on the coin forum there was a post where there is a restaurant 80 miles away that will take silver coins as payment for meals. I may have to go out for a ride with my parents and take them out for a Friday fish fry for my cost of $2. www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/06/28/the-fascinating-reason-why-a-wis-restaurant-gives-huge-discounts-to-customers-who-pay-with-coins-minted-before-1965/Todays find out of $1000 searched. In the good old days (8 months ago) that would be $75 in silver. Today you'd be lucky to get $45. Someone in the know with more pounds of silver than I weigh (and I'm a big boy) wit whom I've traded with in the past told me 2 days ago that silver will not rebound until 2016. It cost's more than $16 to mine an ounce of silver so if you were smart and had bought physical silver (coin or bar in hand) vs stock market paper the recent horrible drastic drop in price is purely market manipulation.

As much as I love the latest GS models, when it came down to my high dollar purchase, there was one choice and I think I would still put a 60's Speedmaster and a Snowflake Tudor in front of the new GS I'm afraid cussing1.gif

Why a GS and not a vintage KS which is essentially the same watch built in different factories back in the day. King Seiko and Grand Seiko were the top-of-the-line models made by two rival Seiko factories in not so friendly competition with each other. GS was finally established as the top Seiko line after several years of back and forth. Both lines ended during the quartz wars but the GS was brought back in the last few years. Good read here by the way, www.scribd.com/doc/12811123/A-Journey-in-Time
