So I have this one is inbound. As some of you know I grabbed it for the bracelet. My question is what is going on with the watch? Dial code is 6139-6009T case back is marked 6139-6005 SER# 630014 Black dial with yellow inner bezel/indicator? Your thoughts

Looks like it's ripe for harvesting...parts are probably worth more than the whole, it seems all legit other than the indicator ring (for the blue model)
Rob.
I am in the market for pushers and a crown for a 6139-6005 which is missing them.

Looks like it's got some good parts. My guess is that you'll find the dial to be blue rather then black.

I'd take the bracelet, and sell the head to try and recoup some of your investment.

I'd take the bracelet, and sell the head to try and recoup some of your investment. That is how I'm leaning. I've seen the guys around here do amazing things with dials, it maybe can be saved. I want to get a look at the movement before I do anything with it. Someone suggested it looked a bit like some moisture intrusion. The seller says the watch is working.

If the stem & crown were present, you'd be golden. Hopefully it is running, so you can get a decent return.

The nickel plate on the batons and the SEIKO is cactus, so proceed with caution.
The indicator ring is OK, bezel is OK, hands are OK. If it has the correct stem, that's a win.
As for making a complete piece out of it, not the best value. It would cost a bit to clean that up. If you can get it for say 150ish, might be worth it.

So far I've not found any proof that a 6139-600x black dial watch exists or ever has. Personally I think the dials tarnish with age as all the black ones I've had in the past have turned out to be blue when I cleaned the dials. I've not found any referrence in Seiko catalogues to indicate they ever made a black dial version. A old guy I have become friends with who worked for Seiko said he'd never seen a black one other than on the 60xx models. They are just a really dark blue I think but no doubt someone will prove me wrong at some point. I have a cheaper option for the stem and crown as long as the gear and spring are in place it'll work with the inner bezel too. The blue dials came with black inner bezels not yellow but some of the yellow dial watches came with black inner bezels (Aussie market). I reckon the dial might clean up ok. Here is one I done recently including the hands. I'd clean the dial very carefully with tincture of green soap first so it comes up as clean as possible but you need to be really super careful doing this because of the Seiko being delicate and you don't want to wear away any text. Before: After:

The blue dial 6139's never came with a yellow inner bezel. The movement + dial are probably a transplant into that case. The dial + hands look like they would clean up with a re-lume. It's a salvageable watch with a little work and a replacement inner bezel. I'd hold on to it until the right parts came along for the restoration.

If you're planning on doing the work yourself, I'd say go for it...you'll eventually find the parts you need. If you will be sending it off to get all the work done, I'd then definitely take a pass. Sell it to someone who has the means to fix it, and recoup some of your funds. Just seems to me, that after paying for the work/parts, you'll be in for more that it's worth...which is something I always try to avoid. There are still some nice options out there, hold out for something better.

That could be the start to a great project. Lots of good parts there. Does it have the stem / crown? Wait, this is the reason you were asking me about yellow indicator rings? Ugh, I'm sorry, I assumed you were talking about the ones that had faded to white. This is a composite piece, made of two (at least) different watches.

Quick question . . . . . where is the seller located?
Just asking since the case back and dial don't match. Just wondering if that inner ring is an AM part?

The dials and case backs do not match. My 6139-6001 August 70 proof/proof has a 6030 dial number. My NOS 6139-6005 had a 6009R dial number. The only thing I can see wrong with the watch is the inner bezel colour is wrong. Likely originals gear got stripped so it was replaced for what they had left in stock a yellow.

Interesting . . . . weird but interesting . . . . I didn't know that. If it's an early example, should it have a notched case?

Interesting . . . . weird but interesting . . . . I didn't know that. If it's an early example, should it have a notched case? Only the first watches had that notched case. My Aug 69 has a notched case but my Aug 70 doesn't. Both are proof dials. I also had a March 70 resist dial watch so it was older than one of my proof watches and that had a notched case. Lots of small details to learn on these watches if you want to spot a wrong one from 50 paces. The watch in question which this post is about looks like it's the real deal to me. It's just been used to within an inch of it's life but to me it looks like it'll come up a treat and make a nice watch. The way I use to spot aftermarket dials (you get these in proof and resist as well as plain) is if you look at the minute markers under the minute sub dial they are shorter than all the other markers on the dial. On the aftermarket dials I've seen this is not the case they are the same length throughout. Also the colour of the dial looks matt on the aftermarket ones and often too bright as the blue is often referred to as black in my view. The aftermarket dials also have crap bits around the day/date and the model numbers are not in the correct position. Hope that helps.
