They have Quartz "Seiko 5's" don't they? They sure do and they don't break any of the rules for the 5 traits of the Seiko 5. The Japanese treat 'automatic' as self running or never needs winding; which of course describes a quartz movement as well.

Quartzes do not have Diashock but Seiko bends the rule as a marketing tool to show entry level.

Seiko was pretty specific in their own description of the 5 attributes. You can find at minimum, three different definitions with a simple Google search. Some of them do not include 'Dia' anything. But as you say, Seiko is quite at home wandering around the periphery of it's own marketing

So true Dr. of all things Seiko Penguinbce - there are many 'definitions' out there. Recently Seiko USA expanded their Corporate Marketing take on revisionist history and came up with this: www.seikowatches.com/5sports/seiko5story/why5.htmlTo save everyone a click-through, they start off with this somewhat-less-than-universally accepted verbiage:: THE SEIKO 5 STORY WHY "5" ? From the very start, Seiko 5 was created to be a watch whose performance would serve the demanding needs of the new 1960’s generation, who cared less for tradition and more about life. The watch had five key attributes : 1. Automatic winding 2. Day/date displayed in a single window 3. Water resistance 4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position 5. Durable case and bracelet
Because it grew out of the watch itself, the name Seiko 5 was deemed to express what made Seiko great and was chosen. A simple and memorable name for a simple but serious watch.OK fine, Seiko can tell their story and I cannot prove otherwise, but for years I believe the world of watch collectors defined Seiko 5 as: 1. Diashock 2. Diaflex (mainspring) 3. Day 4. Date 5. Water Resistant So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Think no.5 Durable case and bracelet is a bit of a grasp as they could not think of anything cool to put as the last item. Personally I hate the big 5 they stuff on these watches.... as a rule.
