I picked up a "Johnny Player Special" (6138-8039) yesterday. Basically got it for the dial, hands, and chapter ring as it appears the case and crystal are a mess. But those inside though....... Oddly, it supposedly only keeps time when the chrono is running. Sounds like it'll need a service in addition to a case refinishing.

that can become an absolute beauty - congrats!
sounds like the chrono clutch is all but done for. I might just let it run with a sweep second hand going at all times and call it a day. with Spencer no longer taking on new jobs for a hiatus while he works down his back log, I say go ahead and enjoy it for a while and worry about the service later on.
I'll check my stash to see if I have that crystal.

It could just be loose screws on the chrono bridge causing your problem. I'd have a look at them. It also looks like the top pusher is stuck in so it will need new gaskets.
If Jon doesn't have a crystal, 340W18GN, I most likely do.

I'm not a fan of these "helmet-like" cases, but that dial is a beauty! The hands and chapter ring really look great, too.
The bracelet is not original, or is it?

That's a bent chrono pivot from using the wrong tools to press the sweep hand on. You can't fix them but the good news is the column wheel for the 6138 is easier to find than the 6139. If Jon doesn't have a crystal, 340W18GN, I most likely do. Watch arrived today, and the dial, minute track, and hands are as glorious as I'd hoped. Watch runs very well once the chrono is set to work, and from what I can tell here at work (can't open case) the rotor swings smoothly. The case is a little beat up, so that's going to need to be addressed I suspect, and the crystal, well, I do need one of those. I was pleased to see that cycling the start/stop chrono has caused the pusher to set back to the correct position. I suspect the spring on the pusher was gunked up or something as now it's working just fine and resetting perfectly. I don't have Jon's contact info to inquire about a crystal, can someone help me out with that? Also - I haven't replaced one of these crystals, if anyone can point me to a diagram of the bezel and crystal assembly so I can work through that I'd appreciate it.
