Hi guys,
I'm still looking for something nice with a white dial. Found one cheaply on the 'Bay, but it's reported as not working.
Watch in question is in excellent condition, according to the photos. Has removable battery cover in caseback. Appears to show no damage of any kind in the battery area (no gouging, battery leakage, etc.). Caseback is the pry-off kind; if it's been removed, it was likely by somebody who knew how to do it properly. New battery has been tried, but hands do not move.
Given the above, is it possible to guess at the likely reasons for the no-worky condition?

Entirely possible that it is just sticky inside. Or it could have a buggered coil from a botched battery change. Or the battery leaked.
It has been my experience with vintage SQ that when they don't run it's just because the oil has thickened up. These old watches normally don't have major problems.

Thanks. I've asked the seller a few questions. If I like the answers, I'm going to take a chance on it.

The 9943 movement is the Grand Quartz with twin crystals. It ain't no stinkin' SQ. ( I have a precious SQ too, no disrespect intended gentlemen) I have one. Great watch. Original specs were +/- 10 seconds per year, mine is no where near that accurate but I just recently learned it has an accuracy trimmer but I never found the time to add that to my to do list. I will some day. I have it on an SARB leather with a genuine Grand Seiko clasp, with the gorgeous dial that reflects the light. Go for it and Good Luck !

I think I will go for it, thanks.
If it's just sticky, how would a non-watchmaker go about un-sticking it? I guess just using the crown to spin the hands around probably won't do it?

Must look for one, as I have the Omega prebond with the rare 1441 caliber which was rated at the same -+10sec/year. montage Champagne prebond albertville sunset by blingmeister, on Flickr

I know that nothing beats a full service by a competent watch maker but you may try just wearing the watch for a while. The heat from your body may just warm things up enough to get it going. Not the optimal solution but if you can't get it serviced right away, this may be a way to at least enjoy the watch for a while until you can.

I agree that it's most likely just old oils. A thorough cleaning by a watchmaker should make it move again. If it's a bad coil, then you'd have to find a replacement - don't know if these are still available.
My 9983 was simply stuck and a service brought it up to speed.

Yesterday I noticed something odd about the bracelet in one of the photos, so I asked the seller. It turns out the bracelet is aftermarket, although it is vintage. I'm not sure I'm interested in aftermarket.
This is the auction:

At that price it might be worth buying just to keep the case .. these Grand Quartz often turn up with goldplated cases and are invariably heavily corroded so they sell quite cheaply.
Bear (the bracelet) are a Japanese brand and of very good quality. The original bracelet for that watch would have been quite similar to the one you see there.
cheers!

Thanks, croolis. Auction isn't over for another five days, so I've got a bit of a wait, yet.
And by the way... this is the second "*Link to live auction removed*" that I've had. What am I doing wrong? Am I not supposed to link to a live auction? Then what do I do? Just post the item number?

There is a brain dead rule on most forums that links to live auctions are not allowed. There are various reasons for that. But it seems to be equally brain dead that most forums will allow auction numbers or quotes from the auction to be posted. Either of those will get you there just the same. Seems completely silly to me but I'm not the one making the rules

I bought a JDM 3803 once that was advertised as not running. It spent the better part of a 90 degree day in my mailbox, so by the time I got it the watch was ticking away happily. And it has been ever since. This watch may not have run since the Reagan Administration. Sometimes, it's just a matter of working the cobwebs out. I have also had luck with taking the movement out and nudging the seconds hand a bit with a toothpick or something. Occasionally, all an old quartz needs...literally...is a little nudge in the right direction! But a full service would likely set it right.

It's not actually a rule that I came up with, and I really only enforce it if someone reports it to me. It may change some day, but for now, please refrain from doing it. Thank you!

Check out this RARE brown/white dial: ebay 331555008911
(I hope this does not violate the link to live auction rule. It's more of a caution)

I see it now: 6) Spamming, trolling, advertising / self-promotion, links to live auctions and sales sites are prohibited.I did read the rules when I joined, but I guess I forgot about this one. It looks like a link to a live auction is considered advertising or promotion, even if it was not posted with that intent. Sorry about that.

No worries, it's not a serious infraction...I think it was initially created, to keep people from drawing more attention to live auctions, thus making it more difficult to keep the prices down on the poorly listed treasures.
