Q & A from "Askmen's The Watch Snob:
G-Shock Watches Dear Watch Snob,
I have recently purchased a G-Shock MTG S1000. It's a real beauty of a watch. I really love the size of it, the dimensions, basically everything about it, and it cost me just under a grand. Now I know you have a certain soft spot for G-Shock, as I can recount at least two occasions where you have recommended G-Shock to your readers. Here's my question: what are your thoughts on G-Shock? I know your stance on Japanese brands has softened lately, and you even mention Citizen in a positive light in some post, so where do you stand on Casio? Is the MTG range worthy of a nod from The Snob, or if you saw me walking your way wearing an MTG would you turn away in disgust?
Yours,
Watch Knob
Good god, I said once or twice that I thought a G-Shock was the right tool for the job, not that it was the be-all and end-all of affordable (ugh) horology. The toilet brush next to the porcelain water closet down the hall from my bedchamber is the right tool for its job but that doesn’t mean I want to brush my remaining hairs with it.
The Japanese are no more immune (there is that word again) to dreadful lapses in taste than anyone else. Look at Seiko. The same company that produces the absolutely wonderful and eminently praiseworthy Grand Seikos also makes some of the most spectacularly aesthetically ill-advised quote timepieces unquote ever to tread upon the face of a protesting earth.
We all love certain things about Japan: kaiseki dinners, Kobe beef, obsessive ritualistic cleanliness and what have you. But sometimes when confronted with some of the more truly bizarre manifestations of Japanese design sensibilities, one can only shake one’s head in puzzlement. G-Shocks, like any honest tool, are best when unornamented and purposeful — and they are not a substitute for a proper watch. At their best, the G-Shocks have a utilitarian dignity and a commendable disdain for superfluous ornamentation. At their worst, they simply look garish, crude, and uncomfortable with themselves, like an honest country farm hand forced into a suit. You figure out which is which.

Once you understand where he is coming from I think he is alright. Not my style of dude but if you like that sort he is pretty upfront about what he is.
PS The response about the G Shock did make me smile comparing it to a bog brush.

His opinion is as smelly as the brush he won't use on his remaining hairs.

There's hope for the "Watch Snob". This is his take on the Grand Seiko (replying to a reader with a $3K watch budget):
"I would strongly recommend Grand Seiko, though it is somewhat above your budget; it fills every requirement you have and for the money the fit and finish are absolutely irreproachable (as I have often said). As a matter of fact, it puts an awful lot of much more expensive Swiss timepieces in the shade. It will shock no one who reads me here on a regular basis to hear that I can also heartily recommend the watches of NOMOS Glashütte; they are in general less expensive than Grand Seiko and while they do not have the latter's monomaniacally high level of fit and finish, they certainly will strike no one as cheaply made either, and you get good design in tastefully sized cases to boot."

I love Casio. They make great watches at very affordable prices. I actually had to google that MTG whatever it is and at $1000 no thanks. For that money you can have a used Darth tuna or get a 300m tuna with some money left over.

Could Archie and The Watch Snob be one of the same? Probably not, TWS doesn't use any profanity.
