Jumbo with a vengeance - Jumbo 3 today: So this one I got from online classifieds, but it arrived like this: The seller didn't want to refund me anything, because "I can take it up with DHL" and he has no money... I decided against sending it in for evaluation at DHL, because that would have completely destroyed the dial. Rather, I took it apart and put it back together in the correct configuration... Was the most expensive of my Jumbos at 150 Euros, though. It's running strong, but there is much wrong with it... For starters, the crystal is only half as thick as the correct one. The date does change at 6 am. The hour hand is a little bent, as it sits incorrectly (too low) on the pinion. Also, the lume is shot (really, it even has a hole in it!). But it's winding really smooth, movement is very clean, chrono pushers are working a treat and case condition is not too bad. Really deserves to be saved. Came also on the correct bracelet with a spare link.

Wearing a rare A129-5000 digital chronograph today. This is the JDM version of the much more common A128. The watch dates to May, 1978. Not sure why Seiko made this distinction, as there is not a lick of difference between the A128 and A129. In fact, this watch came to me in near-NOS condition with an A128 movement inside of it. I don't know if it came that way or not, as Borel lists the individual parts for the A128 and A129 and they are all the same. Not one different part between them. Oddly, it seemed to have the wrong LCD panel when I got it as well. The panel that was in it appeared to be from an A159, which is a very similar alarm-chronograph of the same vintage. The only difference between the LCD panels for the A128/9 and A159 is a small indicator for the alarm on the A159. The pin out for each display is the same otherwise, so this watch just had a small rectangle on the upper right-hand side that didn't do anything. The watch worked fine, but the display was weak. Digits that should have been black were kind of a dark tan. I assumed the polarizer had gone bad, which is common on these old '70s digitals. Since this watch appeared to have the wrong LCD display anyway, I ordered a NOS (and correct) LCD panel from Borel rather than replacing the polarizer and I installed it yesterday. First shot is the Ebay pic (showing the wrong LCD panel), the second is after the work.

Wearing a boring Spork today, I'll try to add some interest!Today I am wearing my fifth Spork, on Day 4 of my mini Spork-a-thon. It is another flawless used example, that I bought from a gentleman from France we know on the forums as "Megan". He called it "Mint" and it is! Although I could not find a mark on the one I bought from Calvin, this one is somehow even better! ATTEMPT TO ADD INTERESTOne thing different about today's Spork is that is was made in 2010! My other four were all made in 2009. Which seems odd, since I purchased them between 2010 and 2015. I wonder if the manufacturing run was only in those two years? Why would Seiko only make a watch like this two years? Their profit margin was certainly high enough. With the simple 4R15 movement, the prices for these started at US$350. One theory is about how they did not sell well originally. Remember all our disparaging remarks when they first came out? Perhaps Seiko gave up too soon, because they have certainly been in demand after they were discontinued. I have a theory involving the design. I'm sure many of us noticed that the SRP043K has a very Sinn-like design, with those hour and minute hands and the numerals on the dial. It reminded me a lot of the Sinn 656 and 856 Pilot watches. But when I mentioned this in my Super Spork unveiling, a more sinncopated forum member pointed out that it "really" looked like the Sinn 857: Holy Carbon Copy Batman! I don't usually see Seiko so blatantly copying other company's designs! So I wonder if someone "puled the wool over the eyes" of their manager/supervisor at a Seiko design center, but then later the issue was brought to Seiko's attention and they "pulled' the SRP043K off the market? Well, that was my attempt to make today's post interesting! Tomorrow, for the first time ever, just over one year since I got it back from Dr. Seiko, I will wear my "Super Spork"!! Don't miss it! - Thomas
