Suffering pretty badly tonight, and looking for some empathy. Anyone else ever have to deal with it? Any secrets to reduce the pain?

I've never suffered from it but I understand it's quite painful and I'm sorry that you're having to go through this.
I have my own problems with foot pain as I suffer from neuropathy in both feet due to my diabetes....not fun either....and the meds they prescribe help a little....but they make me nuts.

Yeah, it's terrible...and I've never had it this bad before. Luckily for me, it only visits every couple years.

Suffering pretty badly tonight, and looking for some empathy. Any secrets to reduce the pain? Have you exhausted the treatment options mentioned here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gout ?

I've never experienced it but I sympathise. My dad used to get it when he was in his mid 40s if I remember rightly. I'm not far off that so perhaps I should be starting to worry. Strangely I've not heard him complain of it for years (he's in his 70s now) so I guess he either found a treatment or grew out of it. I really should ask him. Too much red wine and rich food Tim?

I don't take any medication, not worth it since I only have to suffer every couple years. If it were to be more frequent, I'd definitely pursue meds. I've never experienced it but I sympathise. I like to drink and eat on occasion, but not to excess...not in my mind anyway.

I take Allopurinol for it daily. I've had it for years says my doctor but never had a flareup.
Then one night at 3AM I thought I was going to die. It was in my elbow which is an odd place for it to occur. I couldn't find a position that didn't hurt. It was swollen, bright red and hot to the touch.
Ice hurt because it was hard. I wrapped the ice in several thicknesses of towel and that seemed to help.
Ask your doctor about Allopurinol. I haven't had a problem since then. It hurt so much if it were only once every few years I wouldn't stop taking it. It's a $10 prescription.
I also limit meat as much as I can. I still eat it but now it's very special when I do. Watch your proteins!

Saul, I'm checking into that tomorrow! Careful, you might find yourself eating more of the bad foods.

Wishing you the best of luck with your itis Scurvy seems to be contained to the west coast. Maybe you can send some of it to the Northside to keep them in check as there is a Northside flareup this year You just need to put some 'tussin on it.

That sucks Tim . . . . sorry to hear of your pain. My Dad had it when I was a kid and he said it hurt like hell. I think the only thing he did was keep his feet up and wait for it to go away.
Hope you have a speedy recovery!

I have had gout on and off over the years starting at age 14. I currently have diabetic neuropathy in both feet and my right foot is deformed with charcot foot. I know all about foot pain.

A quick google search, made me feel much less sorry for myself. I'm sorry you are dealing with such a condition, that's gotta be tough to say the least.
