Are there differences in the movements? If so, what are they?

Tim they are essentially the same movement. There are a couple differences but the main architecture is the same. The 6306a has a hacking lever along with a modified center bridge. it also has 4 extra jewels. (I'd need to check my parts reference as to where they are) The main plates, and everything else is the same between the 6309 and 6306.
Spencer has done a bunch of work on the 6306, I'm sure he'll be along shortly with more defined answers as to the jewel locations

Simple: the 6309-7040 is a fantastic watch the 6306 is a really fantastic watch ... Easy! Please excuse a gratuitous 6306 shot excused only by the fact that its too nice to keep to myself, but too nice to wear outside the house! hide.gif

The 6306 is a 21J 6309 that hacks.
The 6319 is a 21j 6309 that doesn't hack.
That's about it.

Aside from the movement differences the crown cutouts on the case differ. The 6306 is the top watch with the wider cutout.

Of course, the 6306 has the uber-cool kanji day wheel.
I have seen 6309s with this as well, but unsure if these examples are original or swaps. Anyone?

hacking kit is just the lever and the bridge - nothing else changes IIRC.

Might have been one of Pete Kuhn's kits. That would be awesome, though the barrel doesn't interact with the center bridge. I'd LOVE to get my hands on piles of replacement jewels for the arbor bushings, it's the weakest point.

I'd kill for piles of those bushings. Nothing makes me happier than the few times I've pulled apart a 6xxx series movement to find that some wonderful old watchmaker jeweled the upper and lower arbor pivots.

Here's my only current 6306-powered watch. I sold my actual 6306 in a fit of stupidity.

6309 is cool, 6306 is cooler Josh, Is that really your 6306 SS Actus? That one almost gets me more excited than the diver cheering-clapping-smiley-emoticon Yeah it ended up costing me a lot more than I had wanted to spend. I wanted a black on white style watch sort of like Mondaine and almost went with a vintage KS 2 years ago. I had to buy 2 6306 SS watches off of the trade forum, then both date wheels were roached, then I had to use my last NOS 6309 dress watch for spare parts, and then I wanted the hour indices and the Seiko and SS logos painted black but had to settle for just painting the Seiko and SS and the chapter ring, and I wanted the case bead blasted and the bezel PVD, and I wanted a big crown, but the budget left it looking like it is. And of course all I did myself was change the strap and left the hard work to an experienced watchmster.
