This one is for Cam, who seems to have great success there.
Saw this today...gee...looks tempting! The ad had no pictures.

Did you buy? ? I think I saw that one the other day Adrian. Assumed it was modern and probably worthless. However, I've picked up all sorts of gems on Gumtree so I'll take the good ads with the bad.

I don't like Gumtree because there aren't any gems on there with an asking price of next to nothing for me to snap up. Just a whole lot of shit..

I take it Gumtree is the overseas version of Craigslist?

There are a lot of bum deals and dealers there, too.

There are a lot of bum deals and dealers there, too. In some ways it's better and some ways it's worse. Just like eBay there are twits who think their piece of crap is rare and worth hundreds. There are poor photos and poor sellers. Unless you meet face to face you don't usually have the protection afforded by eBay and PayPal (many sellers profess not to use PayPal so you have to do bank transfers). On the positive side, you sometimes find gems at low prices and if you're quick you can get a bargain because you're not competing with hundreds of other potential buyers from around the world at auction. I've had many positive experiences and on or two crap experiences. So far I've only lost a little money when one seller refused a full refund after he tried to double the price after I'd bank transferred him the agree price. I had to pull one transaction back via a PayPal dispute too.

You missed the bezel-less 6105 8110 and silver dialled Pogue in a job lot listed for $200 last week then? :-) Cam and I both saw it but after agreeing to sell it to me the seller never sent their payment details to me. I guess a Sydney local snapped it up.

I'm really iffy on buying from Gumtree outside of my drivable area (lets be honest, i set it to 500km because i'd totally drive it if i found something worth it!) as aside from paying with paypal it's hard to say whether someone will actually post you the item and probably quite easy to get ripped off.
I probably should look country wide and just try and find someone in the area who can pick it up for me..

I figured they would sell it to whoever got their money there first regardless of who it was promised to and who was driving to get there.

Comes up every few months. Think I've had a picture sent to me. And it was a 7n series dress or something like that.

Rules for gumtree. 1. PayPal or pickup. 2. If no PayPal. Accept bank deposit for as much as you're willing to lose. Must talk directly to the person and have photos of front and back of watch. 3. Pay as much as you are happy to lose. 4. If in doubt contact Tristan or myself (gumtree aust) good chance one of us has seen it or know of the perpetrators unless it's a legitimate deal. 5. Unless you PayPal or pick it up only pay what you are willing to lose. 6. Reverse image apps are a God Send. (Thanks Tristan)
Did I mention pay as much as you are willing to Lose?
Edit: very tired and loose didn't look quite right (lose)

I'm not sure I would drive three hours for a watch myself Cam. I wasn't too surprised I never heard back - I might have been the first but their phone must have been ringing off the hook.

So I occasionally put up a wtb on my local gumtree to see what pops up and it's fraught with danger. I posted the ad on Saturday morning and by Sunday I'd had five contacts and I reckon two or three of them were dodgy.
One said he had an old Seiko if I was interested and then sent me a bunch of pictures of a 7549 7009 Golden Tuna. Turns out the same Tuna is for sale on eBay from the US (distinctive engraving). Checking my message history this scanner has tried it on with me before.
Another asked what I would offer for a 6105 8110 like new in box with instructions but never responded when I asked to see pictures.
Another never responded when I asked to see better pictures of one of his three watches.
Basically, I think 60% of the contacts I made were scammers - and the other two didn't result in watches I wanted.
Gumtree does produce the occasional gem which can be found if you're patient and careful, but it is a minefield.
Follow Camrok's rules above!

What puts me off Gumtree are those who post text or phone only- no email.
1. I can't text (well I can but it takes me about half an hour to get one typed out).
2. I don't buy anything over the phone, I want to see photos and the offer in writing.
3. No PayPal no deal! Too risky making bank transfers if the deal goes sour the bank won't help you.
Apart from that as said everyone thinks their treasured item they can't wait to get rid of is worth a small fortune. Or am I just a tightwad?

Described thus: "I have for sale a vintage Seiko Automatic Mens Watch. It is one of the first models of Automatic Watches that Seiko made, and is absolutely beautiful and very stylish. In very good working order and condition. This is a collectors piece now and these are becoming very hard to find. Can post Australia-wide at buyers cost or local pick up from Upper Burnie. $200.00" Attachments:
