Citizen launched their black coated models in May 1970, using alloy cases which were much lighter than conventional stainless steel and mainly as part of the Custom V2 line. Here is one of the first, made in March 1970 ready for retail a couple of months later: The Citizen logo is actually polished steel, but the lighting doesn't show it here. The 7290 movement in this is a 'hacking' 23 jewel version, running at 21,600bph. No model number on this one, just a case number along with the serial, and the case finish code: The black and white simplicity of the design make this a very legible watch, especially with the arabic numerals. I picked up this little guy a while ago for not much as a NOS piece. It has that cool black finish.

Very cool.
Isn't the 1970's Citzen black finish more of a rough textured ceramic coating compared to the 1980's Seiko TiCN anodized smooth plating?

Depends, some are, some aren't. Sweephand would know more here. Very cool. Isn't the 1970's Citzen black finish more of a rough textured ceramic coating compared to the 1980's Seiko TiCN anodized smooth plating?

The finish is pretty smooth, although I don't know the 1980s Seiko's to compare it - to be honest I'm not sure what the process was that Citizen used! Stephen

I like the 8100 models - seen less often than most of the 8110's. There were two models in black, one of which had two dial versions. They are on the top row in this box: Stephen
