The writing and research in this article falls well short of the standard Hodinkee usually aims for. "SKX007’s immediate ancestor is the Seiko 7002, which it closely resembles, and it shares with SKX007 a water resistance rating of 200 m. It was produced until 1996, when it was finally replaced by the model you see here. SKX007 is also no longer in production but can be found on the secondary market, which is unfortunate as it represents the entry price point into the world of Seiko diver’s watches – as a matter of fact, it probably represents the entry price point into the world of genuine, ISO-compliant mechanical diver’s watches, period." Oops, caught out by some bad writing...er or bad reading or a combo of both?

...and mentions its ISO compliance which the 7002 couldn't have been - I don't think. It's still up on Seiko's "Core" site. The 7002-7039 and 7002-7020 are ISO compliant. The earlier 7002-700x are not. Hi. What reference # is the red tipped second hand?

Would the srp49xx not be the likely choice if it were to be discontinued in the near future, or something similar with a flat bezel?

I wouldn't mind a 4r36 successor to the SKX007 at all. I sold my only 4r36, the SRP229 long ago because I started thinking of it as one of Seiko's newer let's-put-a-shroud-on-it models.
