I had a 6309 7040 offered to me last weekend by a guy I've dealt with before. He's very erratic and can be a bit lose with the truth at times - and his pics are always rubbish. Sounds like a recipe for disaster doesn't it. Well after a bit of bullshit behaviour, he offered me the 7040 plus a 7290. Why would anyone buy a 7290? Well this one has an absolutely mint bezel insert. My plan was to switch the bezel onto my 6306 7001 and on sell the 7290, but now I'm not 100% sure. The bezel is almost too perfect to put on a '78 6306. Here they are, Feb 77 7040 and Feb '84 7290. The 7040 is really nice, but not without a couple of issues. Crown locks after 1/2 a turn and the click ball is lose and held down by the bezel. Still, pretty happy with it. And the 7290: Both casebacks are unmarked and I can't seem to loosen them up. I wonder if they've ever been opened? It's hard to see, but that insert has the correct slant. Seems to be a somewhat uncommon dial marked cased in Hong Kong. Couldn't find many images of dials with this text on the www. Family shot: new 7040, 6306, 7290, AM-filled 7040, and 7548. What people say about these watches breeding in your watch box really is true. So what do you think? Can I swap the 7290 bezel onto the 6306? Would a near perfect 7290 be valuable enough in its own right to keep original? Original ones are bloody hard to come by. I was thinking of flipping it to defray the cost of the 7040, but I can't find any unmodded ones sold on ebay to establish a value.

Very nice. If it is that nice in original shape then I would keep it like that.

That's a great set of 6309s Tristan! (that felt just a little weird LOL) How come I never get any offers like that? The 7040 pairs well with that leather strap! Nice

If you ask me those 7290's are only good for parts.. the dials are horrendous on them and look terrible. The movements are supposed to be better than the earlier 6309 movements though according to Spencer Klein's videos. If you ask me they are an ugly auto version of a 7548..
I'm using a 7290 case for my TST..

I'd have a hard time cannibalizing that 7290. Nowadays, they are damned near as rare as 6306s anyway.

They might be rare in original state, but does anyone actually want them, or want to pay good money for them? I'd expect to pay at least $100 for that bezel insert alone if I could ever find one. AM filled ones are usually offered for about $150US, but I can't say I've ever seen an unmolested one go for more.

Those 7290's are extremely hard to find. I think they all get diced up for 7040 parts. I've been looking for one for the hands for a 7049 for quite some time and haven't had any luck.
Great find there and a great looking bunch all around, congrats!

Piss and moan because they're hard to find, and then chop them up when you do. I like them, and I'd have more if they hadn't all been chopped up for parts. Really, ruin a good watch for a pair of hands?

Now you've really got me thinking :-)

Very nice! I think that the 7290s are quite underrated. As said before, most of them are cannibalized for 704x parts and the remains are dressed up with AM junk and sold off as "rare". I quite like them actually and spent a lot of time finding an original one.
