So my wife and I headed out for some dinner at Alfredo e Ada's in Rome, and it was raining outside. The restaurant was very small, perhaps 5 talels...so we wait outside. While we are waiting, a group of three come to wait behind us. We chat, and I find out 2 are from LA, and one is from Berkeley (small world). We end up waiting about a half hour, and a table becomes available. It's one of the bigger tables, so I invite the other group to have dinner with us. We all sit, take our jackets off, and I immediately notice a 6309 on a wrist. I of course spark up a conversation regarding Seiko, and tell therm about our community here. nice evening, with some very nice folks...perhaps they'll see this thread eventually. Oh, and yes...I did offer to purchase it.

Was he an original owner?

Great story and what a coincidence. When my father and I were in St Louis coming back from down south one time we stopped at the Budweiser brewery for a tour. It was us and a man and his wife. When the tour guide asked where we all were from they said that they were from Green Bay. Since it was just the 4 of us that showed up at that time it was like a private tour and open bar at the end

So what was the story on his watch? Was he an original owner? Yes, he said he purchased it new. his memory might be a bit fuzzy though, as he mentioned he paid over $300 for it new.

The fellow I got this one from a week or two ago said he bought it new as well. I think he said he also paid somewhere near $300. That is a lot to spend on a watch NOW. With 35 years of inflation. It must have been a small fortune in the late 1970s. I guess he got his money's worth out of it, eh?

Curious that a 6309 might have been $300 when advertising materials suggest the chronos around $100 or a bit more. I know my father in law bought his 6139 6000 duty free for about $75 in about 1975.

I love complimenting strangers on their watch. Great story It's amazing what conversations come of it. Most people who wear a watch that's over 20yrs old tend to have a story that's worth listening to about their watches. Today I spotted an Omega Seamaster black bezeled diver from the 70's at the cafe in a hospital. "That's a very nice watch sir" is all it took to find out he had owened it since the early 70's. Both he and his wife lit up when I admired it.

Likewise, I like to spot a good Seiko on the wrist. A while ago I noticed the typical slim case of a Seiko diver in the wrist of an older guy at the gym. When I asked about it he told me he'd been given it as a 21st birthday present. It turned out to be a JDM 7548 7000. Of course, I proudly handed him my equivalent JDM 7548 7000 that I use as my gym and exercise beater to look at.
His other watch is a dress Omega (quartz) given to his dad as a retirement present years ago. I guess he's not one to go out and buy new watches willy nilly.

Going with this one for a while. ( Israeli Military Watch ) Got this one and another as a.. Gift from a " Retired Mossad Lt. Colonel in Haifa, Israel ". Aloha Louis ______________________________________________ 6309's : I really like all of these and love looking at what has been around for so many years. These are true specimens of what we have and love for so long. They will continue to be with us for many more years to come I am sure of that. Aloha Louis

Did he say he liked it, or didn't care much? I met a guy in a restaurant that was wearing a 6309, and I had one on too. He said he bought it in the 80's, but it was obvious he didn't care to talk about it.

The only vintage Seiko I've seen in the wild is a 7548-700F/B belonging to the original owner.

The only comment i've gotten about my 6309/7548 hybrid was from a kid at the checkout at Maccas. He told me it was cool and liked the fact i didn't have to plug it in to charge it like whatever he had on.. which as a 26 year old i probably should of been more aware of but i don't care for that fitbit or whatever other digital junk the teenagers are wearing these days. I wish i got more compliments on mine Not even the orange 6309/7548 hybrid gets any comments and it stands out like crazy.

You just have to accept that nobody cares Nick. We love our watches and go to great lengths to make sure they're in top nick or all original, but 99.9% of people you meet wouldn't know and won't give a rats arse - sad as that is.

There is a certain brand starting with R with 5 letters that people are known to fish for compliments with. I doubt you will find many Seiko compliment fishermen or women. It's one reason why I always compliment a vintage Seiko no matter how awkward Cam

I certainly don't expect any because we're such a minority.. and i like them because you hardly see any around..
I guess it makes it more awesome when people actually do make a comment about them!
