A vacation is in my future, and I'd like to pick up some snorkeling gear. I hate renting gear, any suggestions for some decent inexpensive gear for a novice? I'm wondering if something like THIS would suffice?

I'm wondering if something like THIS would suffice? US divers make good kit. The fins (NOT flippers, ever!) are a tad small & you wont get much "push" off them. But conversely you wont go damaging any fragile Reef's either. No brainer for me Tim. Gets you & your dive watches into the water. It's all good. Top tip. Buy a "rash vest" will protect you from UV, stingy things and keep you warmer. Even in tropical waters you'll get cold quite quickly. Buy from Amazon if you want. But would be better to drop into you local dive store and actually try a Mask (NOT goggles, ever!) place it on your face, with the strap off. Breath in gently though your nose. The mask should gently hold your face. If it doesn't, theres a good chance it will leak. And that is annoying when your trying to concentrate on breathing though a snorkel when not used to it. Another tip, shave! Will allow the Mask to fit snug to your face. I;m sure Dean (Bladedogg) will be along soon & he will know shedloads more then me. Underwater wristshots await thunbsup.gif

Go with US Divers, unless Mares has a starter kit.

Go with US Divers, unless Mares has a starter kit. Rob. What he said. Mares is the Mutts Nutts. Though my favourite mask is a Scuba Pro Shadow at the moment. But masks are very personal. My daughter Jess only wears Mares. My sons Jordan & Josh wear Cressi. Cant beat trying though.

My mask is a Dacor, BC is Seaquest, 6mil suit, booties, gloves are Henderson everything else is Mares...so I guess a hodgepodge of brands. (Seaquest BC was just a matter of fit...and it was the coolest looking BC ever, got it used from an instructor and it was so bleached by the sun you could never mistake it for anyone elses.)

My BCD is a "Buddy Commando" (Good enough for the Royal Navy good enough for me) with a set of Mares Abyss Regulators. My back-up Regulators in the bag are a good-old set of Dacor Eagle's. But for the more Techie stuff I use a OMS Wing & Poseidon Regulators. If doing wreak or cave diving I use a Sidemount Rig with the Poseidon Regulators. 7mil suit, gloves or O'Neal, booties are Typhoon. Though if I'm only going to have 1 or 2 "cheaky" dives on a family holiday I'll rent kit. ALWAYS take my mask though.

Great advice guys, thank you.
If I order from Amazon Prime, I'll definitely have plenty of time to return it if it doesn't fit properly. Vacation isn't until Oct 4-10, so I'll definitely get it all sorted by then.

Oh, I'll definitely have one by then, you can bet on that popcorn Or another option would be, send off one of my 6309's to Spencer for a pressure test.

Nothing like hitting the water with a WR 6309. I love doing that! So cool to still use one for its intended job!

I know, right? But, I'm not sure that is one that I would take out to use for playtime. I'm a tiny bit apprehensive, since I did not purchase it new.
